The Rose...is now on dvd. Snuck in quietly with no fanfare. This is a major milestone for me. This means more to me than a specisal edition Purple Rain...The Rose was my Purple Rain before I even got into Prince...its now on dvd..with commentary by director Mark Rydel..nada much else which is s till cool hearing his commnetary. Havent watched it all yet though but this is primo for me. All That Jazz as well..two seminal movies of my being, of why I am th e way I am are now on dvd.

Funny though how I found out...saw an add for All That Jazz on dvd in two weks ago Best BUy add..yow! Went and picked it up--( I always seen myself as Joe Gideon --pills, booze, sex, its me in th e eighties sort of). So I am in pure pleasure seeing Sandahl Bergman again. I odnt go to th e theatrical Fox releases extra features...until 2 days ago. I look on it and they have a list of Fox releases trailers...and one of them says "The Rose ". I freak..I click it and they shjow the trailer..is this out..coming? is it sliiped in for sale as All That Jazz was? I looked on amazon and KABLAM--ITS THERE.Its been released this week I think. I go to Best Buy th enext day and there she is--the rose dvd sittin all pretty just waiting for me--after all these years...on dvd...life is good. I can die now in a few.

In this authentic, entertaining, and tragic film, Bette Midler plays Rose, a talented but exhausted, alcoholic rock star whose entire life is controlled by her cutthroat manager, Rudge (Alan Bates). THE ROSE was originally titled THE JANIS JOPLIN STORY.

Director Mark Rydell originally envisioned Bette Midler, whom he had seen performing in New York, for the role of Rose, but the studio turned him down. Years later, the project fell under his control again, and he got the go ahead to use Midler.

For the concert sequences, Rydell staged an actual live concert with an audience of extras in period garb. Midler performed all of the numbers several times over, wowing the audience, who had no idea who she was.

All of the music in the film was recorded live, with no prerecorded music used.

Bob Fosse's semi-autobiographical film celebrates show business stripped of glitz or giddy illusions. Joe Gideon (Roy Scheider) is at the top of the heap, one of the most successful directors and choreographers in musical theatre. But he can feel his world slowly collapsing around him--his obsession with work has almost destroyed his personal life, and only his bottles of pills keep him going. As he struggles to right his relationships with his ex-wife, his lover, and his daughter, he also has to cope with his failing health. Soon it's clear he'll have to make a choice: his art--or his life. A talented director and choreographer of both film and stage, Fosse was perhaps best known for helming the film version of CABARET and creating the musical CHICAGO.
"All That Jazz" is allegedly heavily based on filmmaker Bob Fosse's own life.

The film features Fosse's choreography in all of the dance scenes which are shot from many angles to give viewers an excellent view of the dance.

The film credits the open heart surgery sequence to the Cardiac Surgical Team at St. Luke's Hospital Center in New York City, John E. Hutchinson III, Senior Surgeon. Dick DiBona arranged the photography for the sequence. The patient is not identified.

It was th ejam upon release..not made into th e sap its become..but still..that song is and always wil be da jam.I listen to Radiohead, Al Green, Rolling Stomnes..and The Rose is just as good as any songs they created imho.
