Misunderstood When people misunderstand what you've said or what your intentions are--does it drive you ? I shouldn't care if people "get" me or not, but I find that I do.
And you? | |

What I usually do is, tie them up with electrical tape and dump them down a disused mine-shaft under cover of darkness. That usually does the trick!

It used to worry me big time, but not any more. If people don't get something that I've said or done, then I just move on (Just take a look at some of my posts here). If I worry about it, I guarantee that I'll be thinking about it a lot longer than they will.

Normally, I just assume it is all their fault for not being smart enough to understand me. It's really all downhill from there.
On the Org though, I would be greatly saddened if the majority of the folks "got me". I would readdress my life quickly. Sign 78 that you're obsessed with Prince: You buy a John Prine album- just out of curiosity.

True for me, too, in that sense...we won't worry about "the majority of folks" understanding us, darling But sometimes in real life or here, people misinterpret how you say something or why you say it, and they get angry. And then you get angry at their anger. This is how rifts get started...it's frustrating. Unless one person makes overtures, it could go on forever.

And you? It's normal though. Everybody wants to be understood. Being misunderstood can be a lonely, frustrating feeling. Especially if the wrong people misunderstand you. There are some people who I could care less if they understand me or not. I tend not to explain myself too much to them (and risk coming off arrogant, unfortunately). Usually those that have what I call a personality clash with me. Sometimes it just takes too much effort, and sometimes I just think, "What is sooo hard to understand about this???" But if somebody's being an idiot just because they are in general, I don't care if they understand me. Sometimes I think I can get my point across better with the written word. That's not to say that I'm never misunderstood with what I write, I think I'm just more prolific with the written word. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Seriously, though, thanks for going into more detail on this topic. I used to agree with you about the "written word" being a better way to convey my meaning--until I came here . It is/was the first online "community" I'd ever experienced, and I wasn't prepared for the way people sometimes used words to jump on others. Or, to be positive, lifted them up with their words. I've experienced both. In "real life", a well-placed wink or smile--or a grimace of pain--can help tone down words, or give them context which is more difficult with the written word. It's all kind of a trip, isn't it, communication in general?

And you? HI AnotherLoverToo!!! How U Doin? Starting up some more good threads huh? U R right there! One shouldnt B crazy if they R misunderstood, but I try VERY hard not 2 B. Thats why lots of people who know me are always complaining that I REPEAT things 2 them like they R children or worse. I do that bcuz I NEED them 2 understand what I say & mean, bcuz when some people dont, it can cause sooo many unnecessary problems and yes, misunderstandings, but I guess its ALL in HOW one gets their point across & to whom. May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love.

Oh sure, don't misunderstand me. It's not that I'm rarely ever misunderstood when it comes to what I write. It's just that ... I don't know, sometimes I find the words more quickly when I have to ponder things before I type it out, or put pen to paper. And sometimes it's just the fact that when I am misunderstood, it pushes me to be a better writer. If not immediately after being misunderstood, then somewhere down the line (sometimes years later, oy!). I've had many misunderstandings when it comes to the written word. But you know, you can become misunderstood when it comes to gestures, and non-gestures too. Body language, facial expressions, etc. can be misconstrued, and although it might not happen a majority of the time, it certainly can happen. There are people who don't really know me, but encounter me from time to time and think I'm such a serious person that I rarely ever smile, and/or have no sense of humor. Some of these same people think I'm "anti-social"...it's not that at all, well, ok it is sometimes, but it's just that I'm shy (no comments from the dorks - that means YOU 2da9s). And once they get to know me better they find out that I'm not 100% exactly as they perceived me from a distance. Plus, I tailor my actions/inactions/comments/non-comments to people individually, like most people do. Meaning, if I find someone to be an obnoxious blowhard I usually keep my distance and let them believe whatever it is they assume about me. Because they don't really need to know me. But aside from that, I really am a sweetheart. One thing I've learned about the net though: this medium will always bring about misunderstandings. Even with someone you consider a good online friend will misunderstand you. Because like you brought up, it's the gestures and facial expressions, etc. that they're not seeing - which is something that DOES help in face to face communication. In that aspect it's a limiting medium. This, of course, is not to say that friends don't misunderstand each other in person, but ... that might be another thread. æ [This message was edited Wed Aug 27 20:55:50 PDT 2003 by Supernova] This post not for the wimp contingent.
