Yes the PS3 is a long way away. Late 2005 at earliest, and it will take another year after that before there are decent games on it. Remember the slow launch of the PS2 and how few games were available?

The PS2 has a lot of life in it yet, and that's the one I recommend, although it really depends on what kind of games your nephew likes.

Benefits include - biggest range of titles, thriving second-hand market, lots of great budget releases, easy to swap games with school-friends etc.

GameCube is a waste of money, given that there is only a handful of first-party titles worth playing. Xbox is a very niche platform so far - nice to have for a few of the better games like Halo and Spinter Cell but it is still very much the domain of the early adopters.

Go for a PS2 - there is something there for everyone.

Actually the PS2 is being released in India soon, I believe.

Well, I would personally have to go with the Jaguar.

Because I know Ian will agree with me when I say that is one quality machine.

Anyhoo, I will have to go with what Ian said.

I regretfully must say that the PS2 is your best bet, although at least in my opinion it is the most horrible piece of machinery on the market. They fixed (at least they say they have) most of the problems, so if you buy a new one it should be cool.

GameCube is a waste of money, given that there is only a handful of first-party titles worth playing.

I once again regretfully agree with you. There is no such thing as a game as good as Zelda, Metroid Prime, or Mario (Although not many people agree with Marios greatness). But that would keep a kid entertained very long. Sadly, a console can't stand on a few games alone, no matter how great they are.

Xbox is a very niche platform so far - nice to have for a few of the better games like Halo and Spinter Cell but it is still very much the domain of the early adopters.

Yeah, I love the system, it has amazing graphics and nice games, but most of them are a bit mature and the great ones are long away. The only true greats I can think of are Halo, Return to Castle Wolfenstien, Star Wars: KOTOR, and MechAssault. There are some cool ones coming out, (Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden, Counter-Strike) but most of those are mature, and the number pales in comparison to PS2s army of games.

Go for a PS2 - there is something there for everyone.

Yep, my entire rant is summed up in this sentence.

I'd have to say get the PS2. There are so many games out there, it seems like there's too much (but you can never really have too many games though smile ) The Xbox has HALO and for that I'm jealous. But I'm still happy overall with my ol' PS2. Can't wait for Metal Gear 3. drooling
I haven't seen that many games for Gamecube. I did play Viewtiful Joe and that was a great game though. Very quirky but cool. I don't know if it's on other systems but I hope it comes to PS2. pray
