I've been writing my own discussion board these last few months, to be initally launched on a friend's bowling enthusiast site (bowling.org? hey, why not). Just for grins I thought I'd toy with some of the emoticons. They're so tiny, it's very different from doing a Skeleton Trading Card...plus animated gif's are quite the headache. Anyways, I took the cute w00t apart for practice.

A friend of mine runs a bowling enthusiast site, and I have decided to let his site be the testing ground, to work out the bugs, build up the features, etc. Later, I may pick my own topic and launch my own org, maybe something to do with Economics...or Creativity...or who knows. But not right now. Right now I'm lending my abilities to my friend, for a share of the ownership of his company, and to test a theory I have about discussion boards.

I've maintained for a long time that the org is as strong as it is because of the very fast software running underneath. If you look around there aren't graphics for every little button and there aren't a lot of useless features.

I'm taking it a step further...even the org has useless features, like how many days worth of threads you want to be displayed. I say just fix it at 10 days and remove the option. Less is more.

Plus I'm making the "orgnotes" behave like real threads--showing your avatar, supporting emoticons, etc. Why program a totally different sub-system? Just use the main engine.

But speed is king...I've got a few optimizations up my sleeve to get this thing to spit out discussion threads faster than any board in existence. But that's all just theory--whether or not it actually runs faster than the org remains to be seen. But it's a worthy project.

The funny thing is, I don't even bowl! :LOL:
