Do you give panhandlers money?

I do...more times than not I'll give at least a little: a dollar, some change...something...along with a few words of conversation, a smile, and a very sincere "Have a wonderful day".

Why? Because I figure that the interaction, acknowledgement and respect probably means more than the money in the long run...

I do occasionally, but it's probably a mistake. They shouldn't expect hand-outs all their lives, and when the social resources exist that can clean them up, educate them, and find them a job, they have few excuses.

Unless of course, they are mentally ill, in which case they should be in a hospital receiving treatment.

No. If I gave money out to every panhandler on the streets of Santa Cruz I would go broke in half a second. Plus - and I know this is silly - I'm afraid of being robbed of getting hurt. I just don't want to risk it.

I guess maybe I am a bit jaded by panhandlers here. This is my third year living here, and I see some on a daily basis that I know for a fact don't need to be panhandling.

I don't give out money. Instead I'll go buy them a meal, and leave them with a "God Bless You". shrug
