What sort of film would return dignity and "oomph" to the horror genre?

The Ring, Freddy vs. Jason, a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre...
it seems horror has slowly lost its soul over the last, say, 15-20 years. For all you horror fans, what sort of script or treatment would return some respectibility and innovative thinking to the genre?

Anything involving the slow and painful dismemberment of Meg Ryan?

Oh wait, that's FANTASY, not horror...

I'm not a "horro" junkie, but if you want an outsider's point of view, I actually think the "horror" genre has played itself or at the most outdone itself.

I mean, you can only walk through the "haunted house" so many times before it's not scary anymore and unfortunately I think that's where horror is at right now. Horror used to be about really and truly scaring people. But now it seems that horror, perhaps realizing that it cannot genuinely scare anyone anymore, has almost turned to humor.

As a society in general, I think we've become de-sensitized to the point where nothing on film is going to scare us anymore. And if nothing can scare us, then horror is dead.

Aw, come on. There's plenty of reasons for us horror fans to be cheerful.

1. The original Japanese Ring. There's a new movie out from the maker of that called 'Dark Waters'.

2. '28 Days Later' - a dark, brutal masterpiece that fucks with your head!

3. 'Freddy vs Jason' - any film where you get to watch Kelly Rowland die has to pretty damn good in my book. Besides, it's a lovely trip down memory lane for some nostalgic violence!

4. I hear 'Cabin Fever' is meant to be good.

actually i just rented 'the others' and watched it - i guessed the twist right away, which was both cool and disappointing. but it was really well done and without resort to a lot of cheesy horror effects.

Kudos to your list! I thought "Ringu" was fucking amazing and "28 Days Later" was the most thought-provoking horror film since "Jacob's Ladder." And yes, "Cabin Fever" has a GREAT buzz about it.

I don't know WHY it flopped in Britain, but I loved it. I thought the ending was weak, but I can't really think of how I would have improved it. Then again "Johnny English" was a smash in the UK and it flopped in the States (I liked it though--I LOOOVE Uncle Rowan)

The end was VERY weak, the alternate ending was 1000% better.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.
