I just saw Freddy Vs. Jason

I'll tell ya, I knew going into it that I wouldn't be thrilled by this movie... but goddamn, they could have done a much better job. Jason was the usual Jason, which was all good, but they kept Freddy as a goofy idiot throughout a lot of it. I miss the Freddy of the first 3 Elm Streets. He was one dark and evil dude, not a silly comic book character. I do admit though that he wasn't too bad in this one, but he could have been a lot better.

One of my major complaints is with the way a 12 hour script was pressed into a 97 minute film. They tried so hard to get in all the information that they made it look so stupid and forced. In the beginning, Freddy explains his history directly to the audience like a narrator. Just so the unfamiliar could know where he came from. Poorly done. And then in the rest of the first quarter all the kids seem to have a million and one pieces of information about what's happening and how to stop Freddy and Jason themselves. God that was irritating.

The movie was filled with cheesy characters, bad actors, bad dialog, and terrible structure. And the really sad thing is that it didn't have to be so bad. There were a few moments when things got serious and interesting, but then it all went back into bullshit again.

I grew up on these movies and was a huge fan back in the day, that's why I get pissed when they continue to stupidify the series. I mean these movies weren't Shakespearean masterpieces, but the early installments were classics. Unfortunately, Hollywood sunk it's fangs into the franchises and demolished them. Instead of trying to please the true fans and partially intelligent audiences, they choose to make movies for idiots who jump up and cheer like monkeys when Freddy makes a wise-crack.

The way I feel about these movies is the way I feel about Prince. They were once so great, but over the years they lost the touch and became ridiculous. I would like nothing more than for an intelligent and skilled writer/director to make a real scary and disturbing Freddy or Jason film. Freddy's character was originally made to be real sinister and dark, so it's not impossible to bring that back. And Jason...well, Jason will always be Jason. He's a bit more limited.

What Hollywood doesn't get is that the theaters will still get packed even if they smarten these films up a bit. They don't have to be mindless popcorn flix. But all they care about is money, so fuck those of us who think.

Anyway, I'm done rambling. There's no point in overly disecting a movie that we all know is dumb from the start. But my overall opinion is that the film was 1/4 descent and had its moments, but the Hollywood poison made it rather shitty. Worth seeing though, just for the fuck of it.

Sorry you hated it, EWM. I've long since given up on most horror. It really is depressing -- I once loved the genre. I'll only go to see this if friends invite me.

The audience for this was literally jumping out of their seats at the end. They were more axcited than the Matrix crowd. I couldn't believe how much cheering was going on. But that's the audience the producers want.

It must be so exciting to see a movie on opening night in NYC.

It's like with Prince. I've lost so much faith and expect nothing good, but I still have an ounce of hope cuz I know the potential to do good is still there. And that's what's frustrating.

we went to see this also and, quite honestly, really enjoyed it. i didn't expect the english patient or the color purple, ya know...just some goofy fun. comparing this one to previous installments of either franchise, it was really fun and much more well done. no, it wasn't cannes festival, groundbreaking cinema...but it was well worth the 5.75 we paid to watch it. it was the director's first real gig and the screenwriters were first timers as well...it showed...but we had a lot of fun and enjoyed ourselves. i guess in the end that's what its really about.

First-timers should not have been given such a project. I would have loved to have seen what M. Night Shamalan or someone would have done with it. It would never happen, but it's a nice thought.

yeah, but c'mon, the first couple weren't any brainer...just something new. they can't really go creating something new out of two series that are 20 years old or older. i think, all things considered, they were pretty creative with the reasoning behind freddy hooking up with jason and ultimately, the showdown between egos. kind of a small statement on the monster of fame.

But couldn't it have done without the cheesy one-liners and rushed story?

oh yeah...i'm all for the return of a seriously, deadly scary freddy...like in the first one. they could've used 20 more minutes..maybe fifteen...in order to stretch things out just a bit longer. and i certainly think a more creative intro could've been possible. but man, after seeing some of the last sequals...geez, this one was academy award winning! lol...i mean, jason goes to hell and jason x were just TERRIBLE! and other than the 1st and last nightmare, that series was a joke...literally. i would go see ths again if more of my friends were interested. that is something i could not say about either franchise in the past 10-15 years.

I do agree that is was better than the last few catastrophies, but it could have been much smarter. That whole first quarter was so stupid, I wanted to punch someone. Total poitless bullshit. they had to add every single cliche into it so the audience could get a good laugh. Wrong approach.

yeah, but what about the first episode of Friday the 13th...it was way cliche! the opening scene was two camp counselors getting it on. and it just stayed at that for the rest of the film. nothing too smart. i think i agre with cherriemoonkisses...i only went expecting fun. i neever hoped for great storytelling because, truthfully, it was never there before...excluding the first nightmare, of course. now that had good storytelling!

I loved Friday's 1,2,3,4,6, even 7. They were dumb slasher films, but they were serious and consistent at least. Then Elm Streets 1-3 were all awesome and intelligent, then after 4 it was a fast drop downhill. If they could just look back at the early ones and give them that flavor, I'd be happy.

by any chance, were the previews you saw before freddy v jason including the new texas chainsaw? what do you think about that? and no, this is not a desperate attempt at a change of subject...lol...just came to mind.

The Texas preview was off tha hook. I've seen it before, but I'm really impressed. They'll never be able to top the original, but this may be able to stand on its own and kick some ass. The whole look and feel of it is right on the money.

yeah, that shit looks pretty good! it won't live up to the first but if they play it right, they could make their own version and not need to be compared...you know what i mean? i looks like its got some creepy scenes!

I'll probabbly end up seeing this movie only because I've seen every other jason and freddy flick.

From the get go though, the story line bothers me. Aren't they in two completely different areas?? Last I knew, Springfield and Crystal Lake weren't next to eachother. Did Jason hop on a Greyhound to go pay Freddy a visit?

This is by no means a problem specific to the horror genre, but what is up with the tide of remakes and rehashed character treatments?

Whatever happened to orginal thinking in filmmaking??!?!?

I know this Springwood is in California, but I'm not sure where Crystal Lake is. I think it's more East coast. Things weren't really clear in this movie, but Jason wound up walking from Crystal Lake to Springwood. When you sit through the first quarter of this movie, you'll be like, "What the fuck, are they kidding me?" The story was so poorly written.
