I was just at the dentist. He told me he found a large amount of decay near the nerve of my back molar & I need to come back on Saturday morning to get a root canal. WTF? I totally take care of my teeth, brush 3 times a day, floss like mad, how could I need I root canal. I am very pissed about this.

Has any orgers had to get this done? I have heard nothing buck horror stories and I ma getting nervous!

Not sure what they call that gas now-a-days...But it will calm you down and make the process a bit easier.. It also isnt' done all in one day. They will probably make you come back a few times.

Now I havent had 1 of those things or any type of filling 4 that matter. But I do have an amusing story. I had a tooth which was pushing against another 1. I went 2 the teeth specialist at hospital who made me a special brace that would help make the tooth go horizontal. However, it the brace wasn't working so I went 2 the dentist and he asked me whether I would like the tooth pulled out then and there. Becuz I was young and naive and I think I had a song stuck in my head at the time I said "OK". So he pulled my tooth out and I wasnt under anesthetic aswell. Betcha By Golly Ouch! eheheh!!

I think it depends on the professional doing it.

I had a root canal done in 7th Grade after breaking my two front teeth in half and severing the nerves. The root canal -- which was stretched out over a month -- was by no means "fun," but it honestly wasn't all that bad because my dentist was really cognizant of pain, pacing, and how to best use anasthetic. Just make sure you communicate EXTREMELY well with him/her.

I will say, though, that while the procedure was only moderately unpleasant, the end SUCKS!! The root canal culminates with them cauterizing the cut nerve ending with a red-hot surgical instrument. I don't care how doped up you are, that shit is going to KILL. But it only lasts a couple seconds.

I had root canal treatment over 6 weeks, count em buddy 123456. Now after the first 2 the only thing that bothered me was the anasthetic. Ouch in the back o your mout. Anyho, it smells of bleach and is reeally strange when they put those little wooden 'splints in...but I am cowardly McDarstedly and I survived, so you will b A Okay!

Did any of you have to go to a different dentist? A guy I work with said he had to go to a specialist, but that it was only one appointment, it took the whole afternoon, but he didn't have to go back. He also said it hurt very bad but that he only had novicane and no gas.

My dentist gave me the impression that he was going to do it and that it would take a few hours.

Go to the specialist (endodontist). I've had 3 rc's over the past year and none really hurt, outside the initial anesthetic shot. I second the opinion that the gas will help you out greatly.

I hate dentists!

Jesus! Is this procedure common in the US? It sounds like torture! I don´t know anybody here in Europe who´s had to go through it (there probably are many, but I don´t know them). I know the term well from many American movies though.

Huh. I've had a root canal (I'm going to the dentist today and I think he might tell me I need another one, actually), and it didn't hurt at all, after the anesthetic injections. I think y'all have some awful endodontists.

Pagey, when I had to have a root canal, I asked my endodontist if it had anything to do with poor hygiene on my part and he said, "no". Apparently, it often happens when a tooth is injured somehow (getting hit in the face/tooth with something, for example), but they didn't seem to really know exactly why it happens.

I lucked out, because the tooth I had to have it done on was totally "dead", so they didn't even have to use anesthetic.
