somebody PLEASE explain 'The Ring' to me!

O.K. so i watched the dvd last night and didn't have a chance to watch the extras. Despite the crap acting, the usual 'why r u going up the stairs ALONE in that creepy house why u should b running 4 your life' nonsense , it is actually a scary movie. But i'll be damned if i can figure out if she was a bad kid, was her mum the bad one, where did the kid come from anyway etc. HELP. p.s. u will die in 7 days. pps , no jokes about my anus !!.

Is this the original Japanese version, or the fucking shite American remake?

I suggest going away and renting the Japanese original on DVD.

Lol, go back and watch it Javed! Right, she was an evil kid straight up. Rachel didnt die becuz she made a copy right? So she made her kid make a copy so that he wouldnt die. Ur right that saved them from death cuz as U see the others who watched the tape died. The Mother wanted 2 kill the girl cuz she was evil. I think anyway.

The girl was not evil. She had telekenetic powers that would make people see things that she didnt mean for them 2 c. She died in a cruel way, so her thoughts still lingered on even when she was dead. The tape was a way for people to understand her story, find her (in the well).

So whoever looked at the tape and not understood it or even cared were the ones who had to have been killed (some mysterious way).

That's my easiest understanding.

she was telling people that she didnt mean for people to see the bad things when they were around her. She was getting back at everybody i guess if they didnt help her, because they treated her bad because of her disability.

This movie scarred the shit out of me.

I also thought the little girl was evil as well. Her mother went mad, then threw her down the well. Her parents weren't bad people.

Her mom killed her, so she got revenge on her mom by haunting her and driving her mad, and ultimately to her own death. Raising horses was really important to the mother, so one of the first things the ghost of the girl did was to drive the horses to their death. The mother, so overcome with guilt for killing her daughter, and after losing the one thing that meant so much to her, her horses, went mad and committed suicide.

The girl also wanted others to know the pain she went through. She was secluded from the rest of the world her whole life, stuck in the attic of a barn, recjected by her father who wanted nothing to do with her. And to top it all off she died a horrible death in the bottom of the well, and noone could hear her screams for help.

One of the main things she had in that little bedroom of hers was a TV. So a videotape was her vehicle of choice for passing on her story. People see the tape, they all die in seven days after seeing it. Others hear of the story about all these people dying after watching the video, seek out the tape, watch it too, and the same thing happens. This keeps going on and on. The only way to save yourself from the curse is to make a copy of the tape and pass it on. Either way, the girls story will continue on infinitely. It's almost like a chain letter.

Oh come on now man, the remake was a hell of a lot better and creepier than the original. The original was a great film too, but nowhere near as good as the remake. People have this thing where they can never accept the new version of anything. Not all foreign versions are better then the US versions. They're no more sophisticated or effective.

rolleyes

The original isn't a "foreign version", it is the bloody original version! The US version is the "foreign" version.

smile

And the original shits all over the crapola American remake, from a great height, in my considered opinion.

There was no need to remake it, and the original is far far superior in my opinion. Anyway it's all just opinions, but I prefer the original.

jesus this is like pushing for your 3rd orgasm, i,m nearly there but just need that little bit extra!!!. OK if the parents so desperatly wanted a child , and mysteriously got her why did they treat her so bad. Wasn't it the case that they got her and she drove them mad with her spooky, uncontrollable powers so the mum kills her?.

This is the deal:

Samara was an evil bitch of a kid from birth. She was messing up nature as she was alive. When the doctor was interviewing her in the room. He tried to make clear that she really didn't mean to hurt anyone. And her response, "But I do." So right then and there we know she was evil. Her father kept her in the barn cuz he couldn't be around her and deal with the images. The mother killed her cuz all her horses were dying. So she was definitely evil all the way.

As far as the tape copying goes, in order to save your own ass, you have to make a copy of the tape and have it seen by someone else. In the extra footage, Rachel returns the tape to a video store and makes it available for anyone to rent.

It's foreign to us, and unless you live in Japan, it's foreign to you too. Silly.

What about the original was better than the remake? You can't say it was scarier.

That's fine. I'm just saying that not all books are better than the movies and not all originals are better than the remakes.

Ring 0 is a superb movie. Sadako is nothing like how you thought she was going to be and even though you see her all the way through the movie, it's still creepy and the end is superbly scary.

But for real scares, watch 'The Eye'. Another Asian horror, with lots of scares all the way through, subtle appearances of ghosts that aren't initially apparent on first viewing (I love things like that) and an absolutely breathtaking finale that competes with anything from any Hollywood high-budget movie. Truly spectacular.

They wanted a kid, but she wound up having mental problems, so the father didnt want her. The mother was compassionate enough to take care of her for a while, but even she too gave up.

The original Japanese version,"Ringu" was scary as hell. I could deal with her crawling out of the well. That was scary enough. But when she came into the guy's room through the TV, THAT was scary.

The mother and son, by making copies, actually HELPED
Samara kill people, thus, saving their own lives.
At least that's what I got out of the ending.

downright scary ass movie!
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

You guys give WAY too much credit to these awful films. The Japanese version was JUST OK; the American version totally sucked horse ass!

From what I got, Samara was born evil: She never slept during her entire life; she caused her parents to hallucinate; she drove the horses nuts; and at her young age, she could live for seven days in a dark, cold, wet well without food... She definitely wasn't normal. (And didn't someone mention she stood in the same place, without moving, for hours?) Anyway, her mom offed her, and she haunted her and dad out of revenge.

Why she would be angry at her initially loving mom, whom she drove nuts, is beyond me. Why the female lead, or we as viewers, should sympathize for a girl born evil is beyond me. Why she would turn her murderous attentions to people altogether uninvolved with her death is beyond me. Why she would use a video tape as means to reach victims is beyond me. (Was TV, let alone video tapes, even around when she was young? And why would she choose the VHS format? Why not DVD or a Website, which are more timely nowadays?)

Again this movie sucks. Now let's try to figure out Kubrick's "The Shining." Now THAT is a smart horror movie.
