Waiters/Waitresses...vent your frustration here!

i just don't get it. we all go out to eat. we all have had servers. why do some people feel the need to treat their waiter/waitres like a complete worthless piece of shit? i mean, just because i'm a waiter does not mean i don't have a brain or feelings. its like, because i'm your server you suddenly think i'm not as good as you but the day i graduate law school i'll suddenly become an impressive human being. Fuck that! surely some of you know what i'm talking about here. why do people get server and servant confused. and lets not forget the assholes who treat you like shit and talk to you like your an imbecile and run you around like an asshole only to leave some crap tip! Ugh...i get so frustrated after work sometimes! thank god for yoga...and shiraz! ok, now that i've vented, are there any waiters who would like to get some steam out? this is the place to let the org public know how to treat their server when they go out...not that you guys are not already aware of such things!

by the way...a proper tip for good service is at least 18% of the TOTAL bill...not the pre-tax total! i shouldn't have to pay to serve you!

I just had a absolutely horrid waitress experience on my vacation.

I'll spare you the details...lets just say that slow service ended w/ a drink spilled by said waitress in my lap.

I still tipped though. It's not an easy job, but damn it was a drag.
I'm firmly planted in denial

I never worked in food services, but I am ALWAYS nice to the people handling my food!
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

I work in a resturaunt as a cook...I hear a lot of stories.

It really bugs me when servers get stiffed...do these people not realise that most servers do not make over 3 bucks an hour (if they are lucky)??? They NEED tips!!! They have kids and stuff too!!!

I always try to tip well when I go out...I know how it is.

not only that nikster, but while servers make their measley $2.80 an hour, if they are stiffed by someone that means the server actually PAID TO SERVE THEM! this is due to the fact that servers are taxed a percentage of ALL total SALES. if you stiff your server, no matter how bad the service was, you are a low, awful person! regardless of how long you waited, or if your food was not good, or if you didn't like the overall experience (none of which is necessarily the server's fault) the fact remains that someone other than yourself brought food and drink to your table. you did not cook, serve or clean up. even the worst service in the world deserves to be left the cost of taxes. and as a server i am especially sensitive to poor service. i work hard as hell for my money (uh huh, its the donna summer remix!) and if someone gives me poor service i am angered. i will leave a tip and also tell the server that i am in the business and he/she needs to either get better or leave. no shit, i've done it. but at least i am honest and still pay for that service (and i'm not talking about crazy busy days either...just your average shift).

Very true. When I was a server, working 40 hours a week, my 'paycheck' would only end up being like $40.00 for two weeks of work. The taxes eat up the rest. The tips are almost 100% of what I was earning.

We were taxed a little differently than you, we had to enter in how much we earned in tips each night, and would get taxed on that. Of course, none of us would ever enter what we really earned, we just put down 5% of our sales. If I would have claimed the full amount, I wouldn't get any paycheck, I would actually have to pay additional taxes every two weeks.

we don't tip in england because waiters get a salary.

i don't get tips in my office job?

i know in new york at least waiters don't get a salary they just work for tips, so i can understand.

but i must say that i really do believe in what the word means " tip" a bonus for a job well done.

or not if it isn't.

in the states, period, servers don't get a salary. they are paid well below minimum wage...well below. so, when you are in the states, instead of thinking of the money as a tip think of it as payment for a service. when people go out to eat they need to be prepared to include payment for their server in their budget. i don't know what your job is but you are being paid for whatever service you're providing. even if you have an "off" day, you are still being paid. you know, running around for 8 hours while people need this and that can wear you down by the end of a shift...its not the same as sitting in an office or a cubicle. its a tough job. you smile at people who put you down and treat you poorly just as much as you smile at the nice people. if you don't "tip" because the service wasn't what you wanted, take a minute to ask yourself "well, did i get up and cook my food? did i get my place settings? did i fill my cup with soda/beer/water/tea? did i clear my plate away from the dinner table?" if the answer is "no", then you need to be tipping whoever did.

TIPPING IS NOT A CITY IN CHINA! lol

I think we need to quit calling them "tips" because that's very misleading.

If you can't afford to pay your server, then don't go out to eat! It's part of your bill just like the food!

We had a mandatory 15% gratuity placed on tables of 8 or more. I LOVED when I would get a party of 8 people who I KNEW had every intention of not tipping me, just to see the look on their faces when they realize they weren't gonna get away with it. They would argue with the management till they were blue in the face about it, and it did no good because we had to do it. If they removed the gratuity, we would get slapped with a discrimintation lawsuit for selectively applying a mandatory gratuity. So EVERYONE had to pay it.
