Finding a voice

As some of you may know, I've been taking a break 2 work on some of my music and it's been going along great. The only probably I have rigt now is, I'm having difficulties with finding my voice.

Iwritten over 125 songs, but I haven't written anything in a couple of years. I use 2 think it was, cuz of writters block, but now I'm beginning 2 see it's just I don't know where my passions lies. mostly all lyrics and what I realize is, it's mostly about love, sex or heartbreak sometimes I'm beginning 2 think I'm sounding as if I'm repeating myself.

I don't want 2 be like everybody else, I want to find a style on my own, but in the process how does one find that inspiration 2 even begin on the journey?

All I know is I want 2 write meaniful stuff that can maybe change a person life. I want 2 effect the world but in a completely clever way...

Singing about sex or heartache just won't do it
Maybe I'm beeing 2 hard on myself, Maybe I'm being just a little bit 2 difficult on my work, but once I begin on a process it's really important that I put my all in2 it and do right

Do any of y'all have some serious advice? I would like 2 hear Otan's answer 2 this lol

Make more. Repeat yourself. It will teach you. Combine the best parts of a dozen tracks into one. Quantity can yield quality in this way. Consult Skeleton Trading Cards for guidance, as an example--the first 50 were crap.

First, Digi, I commend you on actively pursuing inspirations other than sex, heartache and "love," the latter of which I suspect most contemporary writers know nothing.

I don't write lyrics, but I suspect the flow of inspiration is the same for most artists and creators. My best advice is: live, live, live. Life offers so many variables, so many minute details if you pay close attention, that you'll one day have more inspiration than you could ever dream of putting into verse. Just try to notice everything you can.

Creativity is the process of combining what already exists into a new combination. Lammastide is correct--look around you.

And, yes, write notes and don't be afraid to rehash your own old ideas. Creative genius is not as spontaneous as we think... it's just that those geniuses have the luxury of hiding their first hundred drafts from the public eye wink

TRON

I understand what you're going through.

I haven't written or recorded much since 2001 either.

I've realized that it's even worse to try to force it and just accept it as a dry spell.

It'll come back to you. It always does.

Digi ~
There is some very good advice offered from several orgers here. The tricky thing about changing someone's life or affecting the world as you say you want to ,is that you can never really know precisely what will affect another. Filling your music with your own passion and spirit ~ keeping close to your own "Truth" is the best creative course. For some people it takes only a raindrop ~ others need a hurricane. Sometimes if we slow ourselves and don't force the issue, the answer presents itself. You say that you don't know where your passion lies. Let your mind wander across all the aspects of your life. How do you feel when a certain area is threatened. What would it be like if this or the other was taken from you. What would you wish gone from your life? Just some ideas for a starting point ~ the answer does lie within you. Best to you on your journey.
