Black labs are wonderful with children. They are lively and gentle. i grew up with a black lab and I recommend them to anyone who is a dog lover and has children.

My shih tzu is the coolest dog in the world and she doesn't shed! This breed also live up to 19 years and acts puppy like until the end! My little woof sleeps alot, but at 13, she is still as rowdy as a puppy, loves people, and loves to spend the day at the park! Her breed plays if you want to play or will entertain herself if you are busy. However, if you can stand seasonal shedding (truely), I would also recommend a welsh corgi! Mine is a herder, but she is perfectly content herding the hubby and I around, as well as the shihtzu! She is sweet and snuggly, gives hugs and plays well with kids even though she isn't around them alot! (although she is a chicken) Each of these breeds have rescues available(search the internet), so that you can guarantee their size and make sure that there are no health or temperment problems that you may encounter from shelter dogs!

a Beagle would be fantastic around kids. They're not aggressive at all. They're very sensitive and compassionate dogs. We took in a stray beagle 4 years ago, and she's been awesome (I have 3 dogs actually, lol). The only downside to them is that you have to potty train them real well, or they will let loose all over your house. Also, they LOVE to eat, so you have to be careful with their diet.

Funny. Those are all of my excuses for not wanting children!

add in needy though.

Do you want a dog (yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap yap) or a dog (WOOF!)

Don’t know much about the little chaps, but for a big dog for kids and a good companion for yourself you can’t go wrong with Rough Collie (lassie dog). They are excellent family dogs and well renowned for not only being tolerant of kids but very protective of your family. If the hair is a problem then just go for the Smooth Collie (same dog but bred to be short haired).

Beautiful and very intelligent

and Ssooo cute when puppies!

Justkelly wanted a dog, this IS a dog. Not only that she wanted to get a dog for her kids, this is a great dog for kids. I can't be doin' with those little yap yap lap dogs, might as well get a guinea pig.

HOWEVER if Justkelly lives on the 30th floor in a little appartment then fair enough. If she lives in a field then perfect!! mr.green

I suggest that u get a mixed breed, because often pure bred dogs can have problems, which can cost u a lot of money.
Mixed breeds are much more hardy!

k, kelley, cuz I know you an all. This response will make me late for work...hope you appreciate that..LOL
Everyone has said get a pound pup. I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE!!! Those dogs are fixed already, have had their first shots, and you can find a puppy. if that is what you want. Start at animalhavenkc.org. That is where we got our gal. Second, don't just look at the personality of the dog, look at what the health concerns are for a dog, etc. You will be paying for vet visits and all that, and you at least need to know what is possible. Third, do you have the time and patience to train a puppy? IF you are in the chat on the org, and the puppy has to pee--the puppy comes first, sorry to let you know. Or the puppy will never learn to be housetrained. Fourth, in your city, pit bulls are illegal. You can't have em. (that was just an FYI).
Don't go spending money on a puppy that more than likely came from a puppy mill. Save a dog/pups life at the shelter. They need and deserve a home where kids can love them, and give them a wonderful life. (Are your kids willing to help care for this pup? by the way?)
Thats all I can think of.
Much love to ya babies!

Get a mutt. I come from the perspective of a veterinary nurse, so take that for what it's worth, but purebreds are not as healthy as mutts, as a general rule, and I think that mutts tend to have better temperments.

With kids, I would also highly consider getting an adult dog, even if you are going to get a purebred. You can have a better sense of the temperment that way.

If you are going to get a purebred, get it from a purebred rescue, rather than a breeder.

And don't be lulled into a false sense of safety by getting a breed that is "always so good with children". . .I've had many, many Golden Retrievers try to bite me! Be careful. Big dogs are wonderful, but they are very capable of killing a person who can't fight back.

Go to the pound. Get a sweet little mutt. Have fun. biggrin

do you have a favorite breed of dog ??

if so...please tell me what it is and why you like the breed...

keep in mind that i have 2 children...ages 8 and 5...

and i dont like a bunch of doghair all over my house...

other than that...hook me up !!!

You CANT go wrong with a SHIH-TZU. It's small, doesnt shed, is very gentle, loves kids, easily trained, not hyper, barks very little, and has a long beautiful coat, or U can puppy-cut it. It gets along well with other animals in the household. They live 12-14 yrs. if cared 4 properly. They R very loyal, love 2 take car "rides", walks, etc. ( anywhere U R ) They have large gorgeous eyes, and short muzzles. U cant beat their temperment. Very mellow & laid back.
May the BELLS ring 4 U even when ur not in love. hug kisses
