Heroes - who did you look up to as a kid?

Who were some of the people that you could not learn enough about?

When I was a kid, some of my heroes were:

Albert Einstein
Benjamin Franklin
David Hume
Bertrand Russell
Friedrich Nietzsche
Plato
Wylie Coyote
The Three Stooges
Jaco Pastorius
Stanley Clarke
Al DiMeola
Jello Biafra
Ian McKaye
Batman

Shit, there were so many... some of these guys really shaped my thought processes and others made me laugh.

Wow... did you know I met Mr. Shultz? I grew up in the same city. (Santa Rosa, CA) I've interned at his memorial museum and he also has a ice skating rink. It was called Snoopy's Ice Arena (now called Snoopy's Home Ice) and every winter we would see "Snoopy On Ice", a Peanuts ice show.

I was 8... my dad and I were coming out of the building after skating... and he was just standing there. I didn't know who he was, but my dad did. He said, "Jana! Do you know who this man is? He's the reason all of this exists! He draws Snoopy!" Mr. Shultz smiled, and I ran up and hugged him. I've never felt so inclined to do that to a stranger... he gave me a long hug and season tickets for the rest of the year!

He was like an angel.

hug it was... and though this is selfish to say (because I should just be thankful), I wish I could have met him when I was a bit older so I could express my gratitude. His comics are the first in the Sonoma County newspaper, and they'll run the "classics" until the paper closes.

I am talking anywhere from 3 to 15 or so...

As far as what kind of kid I was, picture this: I have never used drugs or smoked. I have imbibed alcohol one time... I was 12. I learned to read before kindergarten and I kept right on reading all through my childhood. While other kids were out drinking alcohol, using drugs and doing stupid shit, I was reading and learning things.

I started reading Bertrand Russell and all those guys when I was about 12... my first real philosophy book was "A History of Western Philosophy" by Bertrand Russell. That wonderful book introduced me to many great philosophers and I loved it, although Russell wasn't much of a fan of Nietzsche. I didn't get into Nietzsche until I was about 14 or so and I didn't fully get what he was saying until much later.

I have loved Einstein since I was a little kid... I was fascinated by him for some reason. I read about him as a kid, although I had NO idea what his theories meant until I got older. I thought that he looked neat.

I learned about Benjamin Franklin from a third-grade teacher (basic stuff, you know) and I found him to be very interesting. I read a lot about him... he was much more brilliant than most people know.

I guess more "serious" heroes would be Irish revolutionaries, guys like Pádraig Pearse etc. That stuff really impressed me as a kid.

But really, I was more impressed by Batman. And possibly Optimus Prime.

I was into MAD Magazine...Sergio Aragones was actually a role-model of sorts as I emulated his style for a many years (he did all those tiny cartoons in the margins).

Oh yeah--Gene Simmons was my first real taste of masculinity...I had no father figure around until age 10, so he was actually a very powerful influence in a strange sort of way.
