A new pill that will reduce "the curse" from 13 times a year to ONLY 4 times.

Sounds a bit scary though, health-wise. What exactly does the pill do?

They've actually been doing this for awhile, it's not really a new concept. With the usual method of taking birth control pills, a woman takes one everyday for 3 weeks, then has her period on the 4th (when she starts taking the "placebo" pills--those without hormones). With this "new" pill, it looks like you don't take that 4th week of placebo pills, you take a 4th week of regular pills--the ones WITH the hormones--so your body isn't cued to have its period. (shed endometrial lining)

Healthwise, it's actually good. It's sort of an old wives tale that periods "clean you out". All a period is, is the lining of the uterus (blood and tissue) that builds up to nourish a fertilized egg if there's a pregnancy. Used to be, before we controlled our fertility, that women didn't have nearly as many periods as we do now cause we were getting pregnant/breastfeeding more often. Also, we never used to release as many eggs (ovulate) the way we do now for the same reason. They believe that ovarian cancer has risen because the follicles of the ovaries are being too irritated by releasing so many eggs. They also suspect that the huge rise in uterine cancer (although it's still a rare type of cancer) is linked to having too much uterine lining built.

So, if anything, this will be a positive thing in all ways! I've been doing this type of birth control for over a year now, but with my "normal" BC pills. If any women are interested, they should ask their Doc.

I've been wondering about this too...thinking that it would probably be healthier. I always wondered why our bodies had to go through all this trauma every month...turns out we weren't supposed to. smile
I may try it if I can find the right pill for me.
