Great to what extent? That he showed the craziest things that people could think of and actually do that people don't, but that they have the potential to do? Well, that's what I got from one of his films...and a documentary...

I've met the man, and I can honestly say that he's real cool and down to earth.

Everytime I've seen John Waters in an interview or documentary, he always seems like he'd be such a fun friend to have and to hang out with! biggrin He seems like he'd be a riot.

There's a lot more to his work than that. If all you see is shock value, you're not even nicking the surface. His work has always been highly satirical - of suburban life, of class warfare, of family life, of adolescence, of high art pretense...not to mention that the heroes in his films are always underdogs who aren't ashamed of being different.

I can't imagine surviving high school without John Waters. And when I've had occasion to (very briefly) speak with him in person, he's always been very cordial and sweet - awesome guy.

Pop culture owns more to John Waters than any other director (with the possible exceptions of Spielberg, Lucas and Scorsese). Waters blazed the trails for the Farrelly Brothers, Johnny Knoxville and all of these gross-out reality TV shows.

In addition, Waters films are more than just platforms for poo-eating and Divine being raped by Lobstora. "Pink Flamingos" is a dead-on satire about the desperate pursuit of fame, "Desperate Living" would have made Karl Marx cum, and "Polyester" may be the best 'fuck you' to Eisenhower-era family values EVER.

Even his recent films--"Pecker" and "Cecil B. Demented"--have much to love in them, even though there's not much shock value in them. "Pecker" is such a sweet movie; I wanted to give Eddie Furlong the BIGGEST hug after I saw this flick. "Cecil B. Demented" is one of those films that was custom made for die-hard film geeks. You honestly think your average viewer knows who all the film directors mentioned in that film ARE?

Sorry...I've been ranting. I just love Waters so much. He changed our world. And I fucking love him for it!!

Ahhh... the Fox Theatre here in Atlanta is having a double feature of "Polyester" and "Desperate Living" pretty soon. I have to find out the exact date. Cant wait to see the crowd that this one brings in!

With the exception of Lloyd Kaufman (Troma Films), I dont know many other directors that have changed campy B-Movie Cinema the way John Waters has. Some wierd shiznit in his films, but great nonetheless.

No Teabagging.

Here, here... he is one of my fav directors (maybe my fav) and although I've never met him in person, I think he'd be really personable and sweet.

Sure ya don't mean "Female Trouble"? "Pink Flamingos" seemed to me more like a movie about revenge and revelling in one's true filthiness. "Female Trouble" is all about being a fame hag, from beginning to end!
