It really does suck... I am not even kidding when I say that it was absolutely the worst pain that I have ever felt... they thought that my appendix had ruptured at first and they gave me a CAT scan... they found the large stones... the doctor said that kidney stones were one of the most painful things imaginable if they were large.

They actually removed my friends appendix before figuring out that his problem was kidney stones. I have a lot of respect for the medical community but they REALLY dropped the ball on that one.

Well sorry about the stones and be ready to drink ALOT of water.

Goddamn, I am glad that they opted to do the CAT scan on me... the last thing I need is unnecessary surgery. :O

Your friend was in hell twice over that whole deal. sad

Here is the first clue:

People who have had snipped often describe the pain as "the worst pain I've ever had."

Clue 2: Profuse sweating

Clue 3: Nausea and vomiting

Clue 4: Sudden, constant pain.

Clue 5:

You may need to be admitted to the hospital for treatment of your LABOR if:

Dehydration is present, especially if you have severe diarrhea or vomiting.

You have severe pain that cannot be controlled with oral pain medication.

CHILD BIRTH

CLUE 1... described as the worst pain i ever had by many women

CLUE 2...Profuse sweating if labor progresses too quickly COLD SWEATS AND NAUSEA AND VOMITING ARE ALSO COMMON WITH QUICK DELIVERIES.

CLUE 3... Sudden and often consistent pain

CLUE 5... Pain management cannot be sought orally

CONGRATULATIONS...!!! YOU HAVE JUST EXPERIENCED THE MIRACLE OF CHILD BIRTH..!!!

The female doctor was giving her own report, as well as talking about reports from other women who told her that their kidney stones hurt far worse than having a baby.

I hate to have to do this, Dora... but you will obviously never understand without elucidation... This is from the Duke University Medical Center:

Blood in the urine

A burning sensation during urination

Difficulty urinating

Loss of appetite

pardon the ignorant question, but is there anything you can do to prevent kidney stones? i've always just figured that some people are more prone to getting them than others. luckily, i've never had to deal with them... knock on wood!

how annoying... i'm answering my own questions now (sign of a dire need for a 12-step org program!) but here is what i found on Dr. Weil's website:

Today's Question
I have a recurring problem with kidney stones. Can you tell me how to prevent them as well as what to do when you pass one?

-- Robbie

Today's Answer
(Published 11/12/2001)
Up to 10 percent of Americans may develop kidney stones in their lifetime, and 80 percent will suffer a recurrence later in life. Most of these stones are lumps of crystallized calcium usually bound to oxalates or phosphates naturally found in food and in the body. Kidney stones come in all sizes. Some are mere specks, some are as big as golf balls. Small stones may pass out of the body unnoticed, but larger ones can cause excruciating pain that usually begins as an ache in the back and side, and becomes more intense and severe as the stone tries to squeeze through the narrow ureter, the duct linking the kidney to the bladder. When you pass a stone, you should try to catch it by urinating into a mesh strainer. Both prevention and treatment strategies may hinge on your doctor’s analysis of the stone’s contents.

Since you've had a recurring problem with kidney stones, you may be genetically predisposed to them. In addition to this risk, men are four times more likely to develop stones than women. You're also at a higher risk if you're sedentary, eat a lot of animal fat and protein, and don't drink enough water. These risk factors offer clues to what you can do to prevent stones in the future. First, drink lots of water—at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day—to dilute your urine to help prevent formation of the crystals that stick together to form stones. Be sure to drink more liquids in hot weather since your body will be losing fluid through perspiration. The easiest way to determine if you're drinking enough fluids is to check the color of your urine — it should be clear or pale yellow (unless you have taken a B-complex vitamin in the past few hours, which will give your urine a temporary bright-yellow color). Drinking lots of water and other fluids also helps guard against urinary tract infections, which are associated with a type of kidney stone that develops among women.

If you eat a lot of meat and other forms of protein, reduce your protein intake Diets high in animal protein may increase the risk of forming stones by causing more calcium to be pulled out of bones. As a result, more calcium eventually winds up in the urine, where it may trigger the formation of kidney stones. To prevent forming calcium oxalate stones, limit your intake of such oxalate-rich foods as spinach, wheat bran, strawberries, chocolate, tea, beets, and nuts.

Even though kidney stones typically are composed of calcium, avoiding calcium-rich foods won't help. In fact, results of a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 1997 showed that women who ate the most calcium-rich dairy products had a lower than normal risk of kidney stones. On the other hand, the study showed that taking calcium supplements appears to raise the risk among women slightly, and these results probably would hold true for men, too.

On the plus side, if you're a beer drinker, a study in Finland published in 1999 showed that drinking moderate amounts of beer may help prevent kidney stones. The explanation given was that the hops in beer may contain chemicals that interfere with stone formation.

Not being a man helps, as men have kidney stones approximately 4 times as often as women.
