And Now, Let's Go Directly To Salma Hayek!!! (Photos!)

(Mi novia bonita!!! drool I can't wait!!! Read on...)

Salma Hayek Set for Directorial Debut

LOS ANGELES - Actress Salma Hayek (news) says she initially turned down the offer to direct the upcoming cable television movie "The Maldonado Miracle."

"I felt so honored, but I passed," she said. "Then I went to do `Frida' and when I came back and I started reading scripts and I didn't like anything, I said `I need to find something that I'm passionate about.'"

The film is Hayek's directorial debut.

"The Maldonado Miracle" is about the testing of a small town's faith when a statue of Jesus appears to be shedding tears of blood. It stars Ruben Blades, Peter Fonda and Mare Winningham.

"She's a born leader and you want to deliver for her," Winningham told the Television Critics Association last week. "She's very inspired and excitable and bossy and creative, and you want to make her dream come true."

Hayek also was executive producer for the movie, which airs Oct. 12 on Showtime.

Why do all actors seem to believe they can direct? It´s an altogether different profession that requires altogether different skills. Sure, some might master both acting and directing (and maybe Salma is one of them), but it is very rare and unlikely. The only good example I can think of right now is Sean Penn.

Uh, Mel Gibson (directed BraveHeart and won the Oscar) as did Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves) and Robert Redford (The Natural and Ordinary People, though I'm not sure he won the Oscar).

Salma successfully produced and starred in "Frida", and was nominated for her acting in it (the first Latina woman to be nominated for Best Actress in the Academy's 75 year history). Her movie won 2 Oscars, best original score and costumes I think... (not completely sure about that last one...).

In any case, I think she's a talent to be reckoned with in Hollywood. She's done more in such a short time than most established actresses making twice as much as her.

Anyway... it's a television movie, so what better way to wet your toes. She can move on to film later.

Plus, she's fucking hot. mr.green

And don't forget Prince, who is as good at directing as he is at acting. nod

Clint Eastwood has directed a few movies too. Hell, even Arnold Scharzenegger has directed a TV movie. That doesn´t mean they´re any good at it.

You mentioned the Oscars, and yes, that should be a sure sign that the directing was good. Unfortunately it isn´t. Throughout the whole history of the Academy Awards the Oscar for best direction has routinely (not always but most of the time) been given to the director of the movie that is awarded with the best movie Oscar. Not because the direction was necessarily that good, but because people wrongly think that a movie can only be good if it was well directed (people also confuse a bad/good screenplay with bad/good acting but that´s another story).

Dances With Wolves and Braveheart were pretty good movies but it sure wasn´t thanks to the directors. Those kind of spectacles are even more of a collective effort than most movies. So I still think (in general) that actors should do the acting and directors should do the directing. It´s better for everyone if people do what they´re good at and leave the rest to others.

But do check out Sean Penn´s Indian Runner. It´s a brilliant exception to what I said above.

So, are you saying multi-talented people shouldn't do everything they're capable of doing?

Are you saying Barbra Streisand can't direct?

Your argument is good... but, I stick to my statement.

Of course they should. As long as they really are multi-talented. I guess I´m just sick of some people taking career opportunities away from the real talents just because they happen to be famous in another field. I mean, David bloody Beckham has been offered both a record deal and a part in a movie. And he´s a football player! Actors doing the director´s job isn´t as extreme of course, but it still gets a bit on my nerves when I hear that Reese Witherspoon might get to realize her directing ambitions when I know how many super-talented unknown directors there are out there who will never even get a chance to step into a big company´s producer´s office for one minute.
