Okay, I looked at the question... it was this question:

which number doesn't belong?

1584
5255
4164
4328
8243

If you add the numbers in each series, the answers are as follows:

1584 = 18
5255 = 17
4164 = 15
4328 = 17
8243 = 17

All the numbers add up to odd numbers other than the first one, therefore it is the odd one out.

EDIT: Fixed the egregious error in the post.

That's a stretch...I didn't fiddle with it for long, and simply answered "e) I don't know." I like to think I have impressive abilities at pattern recognition, but this kind of question actually pisses me off because there's nothing in reality that would demand adding the digits together.

Dig this... just because I can figure shit out on a test doesn't mean that I can type... SEE ABOVE - IN BOLD.

That "1564" was meant to be "1584," as 1+5+6+4=16 instead of 18... it still would have worked, but I messed up on the typing.

I agree completely. It may be common knowledge but definitely not "common" enough.

By the way, I got 154 even though I missed out on one question (the scrambled word thing, it was beyond my english language skills). Very strange. I thought you needed to get them all right to get a result that high.
It also took me quite a long time to figure out the one mentioned above (the "odd one out"), so I´m very surprised by my result.

Oh well, who trusts these tests anyway? I´ve done a few of them before with very varying results. Also, as someone pointed out, how often in real life do you end up in a situation that requires you to see the logical connection between four digit numbers?

It's not a matter of knowing the capital of Spain, but more a matter of recognising the pattern. The test fails here because it assumes a general knowledge of capital cities.

The BBC test is definitely more challenging, largely because of the strict time limits. I had trouble figuring out what the question was asking a couple of times before the time was up. My score on the BBC test was 113. How did you all go on it?

..and as I remember it, knowing the capital of Spain was crucial to the question. So why object to what he said when you actually agree with it? There´s no need to spell out how to figure out the answer. He clearly knew that or else he wouldn´t have written what he did. Oh well, I suppose this way you got to show that you knew it too. Feels good, doesn´t it? smile

I haven´t tried that. Is it online? It sure sounds tough the way you describe it. It would be interesting some time to try a test without time limits (well, within reason of course) that only had extremely difficult questions. I´m pretty sure that it wouldn´t be exactly the same people who got high scores on the regular tests that would do well on those. For me, I think it´s mostly the time factor that makes me score differently every time. Sometimes I can handle the stress but other times it just gets on my nerves and then my mind ties itself into a knot. But who knows, maybe I would be even more stressed by knowing I had all the time in the world and therefore no excuse if I got a bad score. smile
