hehehe...
While seeing ET I burst into tears at the age of 27 or so. It was not really the movie itself but it threw me back to who i was when I was a litle kid and had no worries. All of a sudden I felt the weight of a period that was defintly over for once and for all. I think it scared the shit out of me :s
When it was first released I didn't cry at all. I couldn(t wait for the soppy bits to be over and see everyone fly through the air again smile
I must have been 8 or so...

The 3 movies that have made me cry and still make me cry are

Terms of Endearment

Dead Man Walking

and

Dancer in the Dark (when Bjork starts singing "my favorite things" in her cell and her voice cracks, it's all over for me...)

I usually get a little teary eyed at the end of "Field of Dreams" as Kevin Costner plays catch with his Dad. I love the imagery and it alway makes me sad as my own Dad wasn't really interested in playing catch with me. Sometimes I trip on how cool it would be to have my own son to play catch with (even though I don't really want children).

I have also been known to shed a tear at the end of Star Trek II as Spock says goodbye to Kirk after giving up his own life to save the ship.

The last scene of "The Way We Were" is also a tearjerker.

Other movies that I can think of off the top of my head that make me tearyeyed are:

Hoosiers
Cast Away
Highlander (As his wife is dying not the fighting scenes big grin )
Old Yeller
The Last of the Mohicans
Bambi
ET
Where the Red Fern Grows
October Sky
Rocky
Rudy

I know there are others so maybe I'll update this list later.

I agree with a lot of these. "Dancer In the Dark" gets to me in a big way. I've seen it three times and I still turn on the water-works.

Here are some others...

Star Trek II--when Spock dies. This really got to me when I was a kid.

E.T.

The NeverEnding Story--the end scene where the Gmork is talking about what the Nothing is makes me bawl because it's so fucking true! Stupid ass grownups!!

Magnolia--many, many scenes

Last Tango In Paris--Brando's funeral monologue

Nobody's Fool--when Paul Newman is letting his grandson drive his truck. It's just such a sweet scene.

Cinema Paradiso--God, I love this movie...

Leaving Las Vegas--I don't cry at this movie anymore, but I used to. One of my favorite love stories.

Trekkies--when James Doohan (Scotty) is talking about the suicidal fan who wrote him a letter...and how he subsequently saved her life.

I've seen the Colour Purple numerous times over the years and I always ball my eyes out at the end when Celie reunites with her sister after all those years. I love that movie. I also cry when I watch "Legends of the Fall" with Brad Pitt when he meets Juliet Binoche at the fair grounds and he's with his wife and kids. Their eyes meet and there is this understanding between them that just breaks my heart.

Kes-The relationship between Billy who finds redemption with his relationship with his kestrel is extremely touching. 1 scene is particularly memorable when Billy discovers his brother Judd, has killed the kestrel. David Bradley's (Billy) is amazing 4 a young and inexperienced actor. Not only a moving film but contains 1 of the funniest scenes ever with Brian Glover as the PE teacher taking the kids out 4 a game of football. Get down from that goalpost Casper! What are you boy?! Some kind of ape!?!?!?

Oh, totally. Those movies are really devastating, and very beautiful.

Schindlers List too. That end scene that was already mentioned, where Schindler is lamenting about the people he could/should have saved. . .cry

Yeah! Highlander, but it didn't make me shed a tear, but it was compelling, his wife getting older and him STILL loving her. It was very very interesting and like I said, compelling. He held her stroked her hair and she thanked him for giving her a wonderful life. Wow. Got to see that again. I think that aging theme really touches one's inner sentimentalities.

And now that you remind me, Kirk Douglas, in the early 90's or late 80's did a TV movie about baseball, I forgot the name of story but I do remember tearing up with it! All choked up. Man I forgot! Anyone remember, possibly?

But Saving Private Ryan? That movie made me sick and disgusted, not only at the vividness of the opening scene (which I recommend to all kids wanting to join the military), but at the propaganda.

Requiem for a Dream

Dancer in the Dark

Life is Beautiful

Vanilla Sky

Jacob's Ladder

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Walkabout

Amelie (only the part near the end where she cries...she reminds me a lot of myself, so that's why i cry too)

I think that many, many films have the power to make someone cry, depending on that person's mood and/or life experiences. Film can be a wonderful, beautiful art form, and remembering scenes can be as emotional as remembering a personal memory...or maybe, as a film student who has been awakened to the true possibilities of film, that's just me. wink
