PETA plans to sue Kentucky Fried Chicken

PETA, KFC in game of chicken

Animal rights group says fast food chain's statements about processing practices are misleading.
July 7, 2003: 10:18 AM EDT

CHICAGO (Reuters) - An animal rights group said it plans to file a lawsuit Monday against fast-food chain KFC, accusing the company of making misleading statements on its Web site regarding how the chickens it sells are treated.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said it will file suit in California state court against KFC and its parent, Yum Brands Inc (YUM: Research, Estimates)., seeking an injunction to stop what it says are deceptive statements on the KFC Web site.

PETA contends that chickens KFC buys from suppliers are abused through drugging, feeding and slaughter practices. PETA's director of vegan outreach, Bruce Friedrich, said the treatment is legal, but "they can't legally lie about it, and they have been."

Friedrich alleged KFC's Web site and other public communications contain misstatements about how chickens are treated.

"The claims [on the Web site] are transparently absurd," he said. "We have tried writing letters to explain to them what on their Web site is laughably, obviously wrong, and they've ignored us."

Spokespeople for KFC and Yum could not be reached for comment.

In May, KFC announced plans to adopt more humane poultry-handling guidelines, addressing the breeding, hatching and raising of chickens. At the time, PETA said the guidelines did not go far enough to prevent cruelty to the animals.

PETA, in a draft of the planned lawsuit obtained by Reuters, takes issue with a KFC statement on its Web site that its guidelines for the treatment of chickens are designed "to ensure that all birds are handled humanely and suffer no pain."

That statement "is deceptive at best," PETA said in the draft.

The PETA suit is one of the new risks facing food companies, such as Kraft and McDonald's, recently. Plaintiffs in "obesity-lawsuits" allege that certain food products were responsible for making them overweight.

These cases have either been withdrawn or dismissed by judges, but some analysts warn that it takes just one or two successful suits to hurt a company's image and its stock.

I wonder what is PETA's view about bestiality..., after all, make love to animals is not worse than to kill them ( from the animal point of view I guess)

Chicken feed is specially formulated to encourage weight gain. Hybrid corn is fortified with Vitamins A and D (to eliminate the nutritional need for sunlight) and laced with antibiotics to fight infections that come from the filth of close confinement and pesticides to control fly populations. The industry has even developed ways to recycle the chickens' own wastes back into the diet.

GROSS! barf How is that going to make me healthy? Eating a chicken that eats it's own waste?

In a typical 80,000-hen warehouse, about 20 birds die per day.(6) When the level of egg production drops too low to make a profit, all the hens go to slaughter, and their battered bodies are turned into "pet" food, chicken soup omfg , feed for animals on fur farms, and other miscellaneous products.

After reading this, it's really hard for me to eat chicken. I try to buy free range chicken whenever I can. I always buy free range eggs now.

LOL Pook, I think it means that the mistreated/ unsanitary/ mulitated chickens are put into chicken soup. I always wondered about chicken in chicken soup. It says "all white meat" but it looks pink sometimes. I'm really picky about my chicken. I know sometimes it just doesn't taste right when I get chicken soup in a can.

Don't you think it's kinda strange that the same chicken they put in pet food, animal feed and "miscelaneous products" goes into canned chicken soup? Kinda makes me wonder how healthy it can be.

Good for you! But how do you get your protein? I gave up all meat for a few years, but I started worrying about getting enough protein, so I went back to chicken.

Therapy

Someone has to speak out in defence of animals.

Personally, eating the flesh of a chicken is the same as eating the flesh of a person. It is still flesh.

Those animals are existing purely to end up on a plate - its fucking disgusting. They are abused all their lives, then killed horribly and painfully.

The only thing that keeps a person eating meat, is the switched off conscience of all the abuse, betrayal, pain and suffering that is in the fibres of the chicken being consumed.

I'm a vegetarian speaking out. I've been quiet for 10 years. Not any more.

I wouldn't suggest running right out and bombing a local franchised eatery though.

what gets me is that we're on a beautiful planet teeming with intelligent animals life all around us. crows- able to count and speak, apes- making tools, using sign language, whales- communicating across great distances, elephants- paying respects to their dead, dogs, cats- interacting and communicating with their humans, bears- unlocking dumpsters in the parks. . .

so there's this abundance of evidence that intelligent life exists all around us and yet still humans stand, stupid in our arrogance, gazing up at the stars saying "are we the only intelligent life in the universe? are we alone?"

ALL animals have sentience of one sort or another, and on different levels. they have feelings and emotions. they deserve more respect and dignity than factory farms permit them.

besides factory farms are evil because they put the small farmer out of business thereby harming local economies, they absolutely fuck with the environment- runoff from nitrates in animal manure and from medicines used constantly on these animals affects our water table, and finally because humans don't NEED to eat so much meat in our diets. we'd be healthier if we didn't. it's all about $$$

imo factory farming is blasphemy against nature. i say sue KFC. those bastards don't need to be so greedy they can't treat the animals right

I can agree with this...

By the way, I am a vegetarian as well and have been for many years... since about 1987.

*well, almost vegetarian... I sometimes will eat a poor, defenseless birdie. I was 100% vegetarian for about 10 years.*
