Is finishing your education after High School looked down upon in the states?

Seems to me that everyone in the States are encouraged to go on to university.
Or is that just the way it seems to be in the Movies or US tv shows.
Is there a certain amount of snobbery shown to people with only a high school education from those who went on to University/College?
just wondering thats all!!
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

from my perspective, not really. you're more looked down upon here if you don't finish high school, than for not goin on to a college or a university.

a higher education is a great thing, but not entirely super-necessary.

Indirectly they sorta look down on you. People are often judged by their income, and if you don't have a college degree of some sort, it's very unlikely you will progress past the $25-30,000 per year range.

Yes, if you don't go to college it is looked down upon. At least in my experience.
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

Yep. Finishing high school doesn't count for much anymore - everyone is expected to go onto college. Community colleges don't hack it, either. And now it seems that everyone is starting to be expected to go to grad school, too...

Most people I know with College Degrees are still working in retail and fast-food chains, or are still with the same part-time or full-time jobs they had while in school. It's hard to find the job you've 'worked' for, so I could imagine how it is for those who just finished High School, and I’m not talking ‘Ivy league’.

As for 'looking down' on those who have not completed H.S, it is greatly encouraged from what I see, that you stay in school, or at least get a G.E.D and then go on to college. Recently I read an article on NBC that most people go to school because they're in for getting a higher paying job, and most are not even concerned with getting good grades.

And they were saying that even if you don't have a high paying job, you should benefit and build upon the knowledge you've acquired from these schools because they're discouraging people who go there just in hopes of getting a high paying job. Now that's something I don't have a problem at all with, because I would not take that away from my experience, but please, everyone in the U.S goes to school in hopes of breaking out of a cycle or improving their living standards by getting an education, or a better job. But a lot of people nowadays even go to trade schools, and benefit from that as well.

It could be a tricky situation, but most jobs, even those cashier jobs, ask that you have at least a G.E.D, even if you are not happy with your job.

If you're studying one of the hard sciences, college can do you some good. But if you're studying politics or literature, you'll most likely just get brainwashed with opinions you could form yourself at your local bookstore for far less money.
Fear is the mind-killer.

That's true too. Some people feel pressured to do this as well...
