Kleptomaniac vs. Thief

Is there a difference in these two behaviors? Should a klepto be excused because of their unintentional habit of taking things?

No, they shouldn't be excused. Obviously, the difference is a klepto has either a disease/addiction, right? Unless you don't consider a person who steals one or two things a theif.

I stole soda out of a fountain once in 4th grade. It was right next to the side door of the store. My bad bad friend Jennifer and me, after swimming, were dying of thirst and were in our swimsuits. So we opened the door, pulled the hose out the door, and sprayed soda in each other's mouths until we felt better smile
Oh shit, my hat done fell off

I agree, fuck excusing them!! I used to argue with my ex-girlfriend about this. Her friend would come over and touch everything in sight. Then things started disappearing mad ... I'm not one to blame people for thievery unless I'm sure and it became obvious who it was. I left it up to the ex who didn't do shit. She just gave me the lame excuse that her friend doesn't mean to do this she is a klepto, in her mind she isn't devious it's just in her nature to touch or take things.

I wonder if people who get caught stealing anything can have their charges dropped because they suffer from this "unintentional disorder".

A klepto is someone who usually knows they steal but they just have too. Kinda like this guy!

I think there is a difference, because true kleptomania is a compulsion and people don't necessarily even want the things they take when they're a "klepto". I'd be interested in reading studies of treating kleptomania. I wonder what the recidivism rate is?

Add: I don't think people with this disorder should be "excused" from consequences, however, I believe some form of treatment while on probation or incarcerated (whatever the situation is) might be warranted.
