Steaks and Cheeseburgers

We went to the county fair today and checked out the livestock exhibit. We were with my nieces and they wanted to see animals. There was this board with information about the cows and a picture of

ARTIFICIAL COW INSEMINATION

Click on this link and scroll down to see a similar photo:

barf This is how far we go to get a cheeseburger? This is basically, raping a cow, so she can have more calves, so we can have more meat.

disbelief

That's nasty.

The world is a crazy place. I don't eat cows, but I do eat chicken and it can't be that much better. Someone here mentioned a book called Fast Food Nation that I want to read. Sometimes I feel really guilty about being part of the human race. What we do to the earth and animals is insane sometimes.

God, I even feel guitly about drinking cow's milk.

Sorry, Red, I know this isn't a fun topic. It just makes me sad and sick. I was gonna let the thread die, but people responded to it. I felt bad for bringing it all up in the first place. But I think about these things sometimes.

Yes, Red, but who does these worse things to humans? Other humans. I don't like abuse of any kind, animal or human. I'm just too sensitive I guess. That's why I can't watch the news.

Fast Food Nation
On any given day, one out of four Americans opts for a quick and cheap meal at a fast-food restaurant, without giving either its speed or its thriftiness a second thought. Fast food is so ubiquitous that it now seems as American, and harmless, as apple pie. But the industry's drive for consolidation, homogenization, and speed has radically transformed America's diet, landscape, economy, and workforce, often in insidiously destructive ways. Eric Schlosser, an award-winning journalist, opens his ambitious and ultimately devastating exposé with an introduction to the iconoclasts and high school dropouts, such as Harlan Sanders and the McDonald brothers, who first applied the principles of a factory assembly line to a commercial kitchen. Quickly, however, he moves behind the counter with the overworked and underpaid teenage workers, onto the factory farms where the potatoes and beef are grown, and into the slaughterhouses run by giant meatpacking corporations. Schlosser wants you to know why those French fries taste so good (with a visit to the world's largest flavor company) and "what really lurks between those sesame-seed buns." Eater beware: forget your concerns about cholesterol, there is--literally--feces in your meat.
Schlosser's investigation reaches its frightening peak in the meatpacking plants as he reveals the almost complete lack of federal oversight of a seemingly lawless industry. His searing portrayal of the industry is disturbingly similar to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, written in 1906: nightmare working conditions, union busting, and unsanitary practices that introduce E. coli and other pathogens into restaurants, public schools, and homes. Almost as disturbing is his description of how the industry "both feeds and feeds off the young," insinuating itself into all aspects of children's lives, even the pages of their school books, while leaving them prone to obesity and disease. Fortunately, Schlosser offers some eminently practical remedies. "Eating in the United States should no longer be a form of high-risk behavior," he writes. Where to begin? Ask yourself, is the true cost of having it "your way" really worth it? --Lesley Reed

I've always had a problem with fast food mainly because;
a) dog food costs more (and that's with meat "bi-product")
b) I knew someone in the health department (fast food places are the dirtiest of all)
c) there's more fat in a big mac then in 40 Mr. Pita sandwiches (I can't even eat 3)

Caring about animals doesn't prevent one from caring about humans, and the fact that the world isn't perfect for humans doesn't give us an excuse to make life hell for non-humans. And this planet is better able to support good lives for humans, with lots of resources and with an attitude of respect for other living beings/persons, if animal agriculture doesn't exist.

The cruelty "can't or won't" stop only because people continue to financially support factory farming. If you (and you, and you, and you, and you over there) would just stop giving your money to them, it WOULD stop. It can stop.

The "rape" of cows is one of the gazillion miserable things that happen to helpless individuals every day, and it happens because most of you pay for it to happen. The truth sucks.

Ah, yes. And pus in your milk, and antibiotics in your cheese. Isn't that special?

Once you stop eating animal products, you are free to recognize how disgusting they are. barf

I know this isn't a popular thing to say, but I'm a blood-thirsty beef eater. Kill 'em and grill 'em. It happens all the time in nature, and I'm not ashamed to be a flesh-eating mammal. Send me to hell for the beast that I am...

MMmmhmmm. But really, you have better arguments than the nature one. I realize that they don't make such a nice sound bite, but come ON, you're not a sound bite sort. Don't say dumb things. mr.green

Um, point is, there are many things that are natural that we don't do because we think they are wrong (rape, murder, theft).

ANYway, as you say, we've done this. I just have high expectations of you, that's all. Reiterate the GOOD arguments, not the crappy ones, gawdammit! wink
