Usually you can trust Sony to make a good product. I'd go with that. No risks there.

I think they're all pretty much the same. just make sure it plays all the formats. I bought an off brand multi-regional for a hundred bucks and it works just fine.

if you have £2500 to spare try the Denon DVD-A1..thats one mean mother

if your on a budget then it is Harmon Kardon 25 (around £350)

if u want to future proof at least a bit then go for a DVD-A and/or SACD compatible model...6 Chanel Music!!!

I have an Enlightened Audio Designs DVD player and it is phenomenal.
Proceed makes some great stuff.
Krell makes some great players.

Go with one of those three brands.

define phenominal? What does a $5000 dvd player do that a $350 does not. I'm not being smart, but if I paid $5000 for a dvd player, it better drive me to the store to pick out some dvds.

TheMax

In general, I'd avoid overspending for a DVD player, but I'd also stay away from the least expensive models. I have the amazing Sony S9000ES, purchased just a year ago, and it is as much DVD player as I could have wanted.

By contrast, my previous model was an inexpensive "prize" from the local video store - a Toshiba something or other. It weighed about one pound, and it lasted about one year. Then the problems started. Skipping, freezing-up, etc - all the problems seen with cheap CD players. It was devoid of special features. The Sony has been completely reliable, and there are more special effects than I know what to do with.

Good luck!

Excerpt from a Sterephile review of the EAD DVDMaster 8000 Pro:

Retail price: $5,900

"The sole point of purchasing a high-priced DVD player is its potential for great performance, and EAD's DVDMaster 8000 Pro delivered results on par with its lofty price, and produced the best picture and sound I've seen or heard from any DVD player. For a select segment of viewers, the 8000 Pro will be the perfect center for an exceedingly fine home-theater system. I hope that, having read this review, you now know exactly who you are." - Stereophile Guide to Home Theater, November 2002.

FWIW, I had a $200 JVC DVD-VHS combo and it blew up after 3 short months.

Come to think of it, everything I've ever owned by JVC has exploded after a time.

oh but you could have superior sound and video for a mere $5,000

I would think it would have something to do with your TV, correct? If you have a $5,900 dvd player and a regular 32" RCA TV, how still is it superior? Give me the sony $350 dvd player and the $5,900 HD flat screen, then I could SEE the difference.

The display absolutely does factor into the equation... you must have a good HD display and good cables.

You don't connect a $5,900 DVD player to a $300 television... it is just not done. If you buy a great DVD player, you will invariably have a great display as well and you will use high-quality interconnects.

I personally swear by Toshiba and Pioneer for DVD players cos you don;t have to spend a fortune for a top notch picture...I'm sorry guys, but, Sony's DVD player are no where near the top of the game.
