If they want to start monitoring people who are sharing MP3's, in theory we could complicate their efforts by renaming the file to something other than an MP3.

Example, "LittleRedCorvette.mp3" could be renamed to "Drawing1.jpg". Once you've downloaded the file, you simply rename it back to it's original state, and you're good to go.

Then come up with an underground method of identifying what's what, perhaps a little decoder add-on. Or a listing on private bulletin boards. This extra step would require a bit more work, but would complicate things tremendously for them. As soon as they caught on, we could immediately switch to a new naming convention.

OR, people could develop a network of listing available files in text form on a web site, then email the actual MP3's to eachother, per a request form they fill out.

I know these ideas aren't foolproof, but there a couple of possibilities that could evolve out of the attack on file sharing. Either way, it will never stop.

So... tell me- the only way the RIAA can catch you is if you're downloading? What if you're online but don't have anything going? Should you stop letting others download from your files?
