American Psycho.....

American Psycho stab ...I have seen the movie and been told about the book. I recently started reading the book not really knowing what to expect except for a sick and twisted read. With out going into detail can some1 who has read the book please give me an idea as to how sick and twisted it is going to get. This is mainly for the knowledge of weather i will b able to read it or waether it is going to b to sick. The movie freaked me out and all i could think was that Patrick Bateman was a sick F*@% but i as i said i have been told the book is alot beter and qurious as to weather it would be worth the read or to freaky.

Thankx for any help if u give any and any opinions.

I never saw the movie, but I read the book, gosh, around 9 or 10 years ago. It's truly sick and disturbing. I don't remember any specific details since it was so long ago. I remember I really didn't like the book. It was boring. I couldn't take the 5 page long descriptions of what everyone was wearing, what cigars they were smoking and what wine they were drinking. I get the point, it just made for incredibly boring reading.

I seen the movie, thought it was okay...no where near as sick as Battle Royale and Battle Royale 2. But anyway, you want to avoid American Psycho 2 the Movie - shit, shit and shit.

I thought American Psycho was brilliant. It's not a gore flick, it's a comedy of course.

I liked the movie...it was a fantastic satire and commentary on American corporate life. I didn't see the second one and have no desire to, actually.

You're in for a crazy ride because IMO it is actually one of the funniest books I've ever read. And yes it is graphic and twisted but that's part of the appeal...the meticulous (sp?) detail to everything from the clothes, to the music reviews to the grisly murders get a bit tedious but I guess that was his point...

have fun...

if you enjoy it, you definately need to give his last book; Glamorama a read...it's my favorite and in my opinion is best...

nod One of my faves. The kill is his apartment when he had Huey Lewis and the News on! falloff I had to rewind the tape and watch it about 5 times. And when he makes that call near the end saying how he'd killed "a lot of people"

I never read it but I wrote a book once and my boss told me that my story reminded him lots of the American Psycho book. I guess that says a lot about me.

The scene where he throws the chainsaw down the stairwell and hits that girl, had me rolling off the couch laughing.

Some of those murder scenes are pretty disturbing though because of the intense manner in which they are depicted.

I bought American Psycho when it came out in MPLS in 1991 - and u would not believe the furore over that book! It was everywhere.
It's an increadibly clever book in the way it is put 2gether, couple with what has 2 be the blackest humour Ive ever read in my life.
Love the way that one whole chapter is dedicated 2 the careful dicsetion of a few pretty ladies, and then the next a whole chapter spent discussing the virtues of Huey Lewis, and Dolce & Gabbana ties - genius!
I knew the movie would never live up 2 the book due 2 the inherent nature of the subject matter, and went in knowing this so as not 2 be disapointed.
I have 2 say - I wasnt, I thought they did a pretty good job, and they were right 2 go with the satirical angle rather than the route that the dire sequel took (I mean, would u really even bother?) rolleyes
Christian Bale was fantastic - I thought he did Ellis' creation proud!
The website at the time was very clever 2 - u would get daily E-Mails from Patrick Bateman detailing the day-2-day mundane aspects of his life, and then one every now and again hinting at the previous nights depravity...

Still reading more (im a slow reader) I can c by the detail that he goes into for the clothes and everything, but seeing the movie first kinda helps to read it. I can her Partick's voice in my head, which helps the reading (i dont like reading books) but watching the movie, i can see the chop and change in the book.

Instead of making another thread, im just gonna finish on this one, and i know that no1 will ever see this post, but im just writing to say, I finished the book, after about 2 weeks, it is finished. Responces...it was very grafic and did shock me, but i found the ending to be weird, it is just left there hanging, did Patrick give up his blood lust? or did he settle with Jean? (his secritay) deffinatly not the ending i was xpecting.

I´m shocked that so many people think it´s a comedy. Sure, it has many touches of the darkest kind of humour, but a comedy? Jesus...

The worst example of misinterpretation I´ve ever seen was how the movie Bad Boy Bubby was received. Some film festivals listed it as a comedy and in every single video store it was put on the comedy shelf, but actually it was an extremely disturbing, sad, dramatically powerful, and socially aware piece of cinema. It was funny too, but that definitely wasn´t the main point.

It´s not very often the other way around. The only examples I can think of right now are Ingemar Bergman´s movies. Some of them are packed with humour, but people don´t laugh since they´re watching a "serious movie by a serious filmmaker". That´s just as sad, in my opinion.

doomboogie

At one point in the book he took a rusty metal pipe, stuck it between the legs of one of his female victims and fed a rat through the open side...

but in other parts, the book is quite comical & satirical, if very dark.

I'm not a very good reader but I'd love to read that book. Can I get a cassette with Steven Fry reading it like with the HP books.

I haven´t read the book but I hear it´s very easy to get into. So do try it.

I seriously doubt that Stephen Fry has turned it into a cassette book but it would have been an interesting and bizarre listening experience. He has a very good voice. It calms me down and catches my attention.
