Say that you are the parents of the little girl attacked in this racist crime? How would you nurture and guide her through this terrain so she doesn't become a racist herself? Or, more importantly, how would you prevent the poison from spreading throughout yourselves? By the way, Jesse is in Benton Harbor, Michigan today trying to assist after a Black man died in a high spped chase ~ he was on a motocycle and it was alleged the police chasing him nudged his bike causing the crash. (this witness has since recated this allegation). There were riots and burning ~ an extremely volitile situation so Jesse arrived to offer his help. | |

All you could really tell her is that the assholes who beat her were not a fair representation of all blacks and hispanics and that she should not look at all members of their races in the same light as those who did the crime. Just because one black, white, red, brown or yellow person does something shitty is no reason to hate ALL black, white, red, brown or yellow people. The motivation for a crime shouldn't affect the sentencing. This is a terrible thing to read, and those criminals should be punished. As well, this terrible racial abuse holiday should be brought to attention. People should know that the attack was racially motivated. Motivation should most definately affect sentencing!!! I believe you meant to say ..."if you killed a man because your wife cheated on you, would that be a hate crime??" and the answer is NO. That would be an act of revenge. Hate crimes are crimes committed against another for no reason other than bigotry and intolerance. Victims are chosen solely for what they represent..be it white, black, jewish, etc. I feel that "Special Circumstances" regarding motive is a good thing and doubling/increasing punishment will send a message to the perpetrators as well as the rest of the world. IMHO...Ignorance should be a punishable crime in and of itself. In my eyes ... if these kids beat this child up because she ripped off their lockers during gym class...they should still be punished but not with the severity they should receive for beating her up just because she is white. If the situation had been reversed - if some white schoolkids in West Virginia decided to celebrate May 1st as "beat up a n*gger day"...they'd be having front-page stories all over the country the very next day.
