Does Prayer Really Work?

Do you find prayer to be helpful in your personal life? Do your prayers get answered and/or you get the results you are looking for, or do you feel that prayer is not worthwhile? Please state why or why not.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

It seems to work for me. I pray and give thanks for the good things in my life and forthe bad things. If I didn't have bad things to work through I wouldn't appreciate the good things I have. And the bad stuff makes you stronger and humble.

cool subject. eye only say that Bcuz one of my BIGGEST prayers seems to B getting answered. eye have prayed 4 alot of things B4. Some things eye did'nt get, other things eye did get. But looking back on those prayers that eye was specific on asking 4 and did'nt get them... eye can honestly say, eye really did'nt need them. Whether it was a specific job, R person, R some material thing. But then there have been when eye prayed 4 a specific job, persons (meaning praying 4 something 4 those people) R material things, eye did get. But now the older that eye am getting the principal part of my prayers R "Lord, let Ur Will B done. just show me Ur will and help me understand it. But let Ur Will B done. Amen."

PEACE N B WiLD!!!

Prayer is helpful only in that it is a release of internal psychological stress and is cathartic.

I cannot say that I have ever done that, therefore your statement is nonsensical in nature.

Like Ice wrote, it's good for making the person feel good, but realistically, it doesn't do shit. People pray every day for God to save their dying child, for war and famine to stop, for all bad things to go away, etc., and nothing happens. It's silly to think that a God will change shit, cuz if there was an all-loving God, we'd all be in paradise right now. It could have been so simple for God to just give eternal happiness, but instead we get tons of shit. Prayer won't make a dent in reality.

if you trust in God, it works. if not, it won't. there are too many peeps alive for God to be trying to prove himself to the unbelieving. i love freedom of choice.

"if you trust in God it works"?

What about all the people who believe in God with everything they have, and what they're praying for never happens? But of course, the Lord works in mysterious ways, right? rolleyes

ThreadBare

It's fallacious to equate getting a desired result of prayer with the existence of God, but that's what I'm seeing on this thread.

God's existence and the power of prayer aren't contingent upon my liking a situation's outcome or getting what I prayed for.

Sometimes, and I've a number of examples (should anyone care), what I sought in my prayers would have hurt me. Down the road, God has enabled me to see how not getting what I prayed for was actually the blessing I thought I'd get (only) by getting my goal.

So, yes, prayer works -- but not always in the "gimme" sense that frame our human existence. Sometimes, the work is seen in the transformative nature of prayer, wherein God teaches us to trust His sovereignty, omniscience and love -- even when it means denying our requests.

LOL.

Not at all. I'm simply recognizing the difference between God and someone whose existence is wrapped up in appeasing and serving humanity, like, say, a genie.

But, the gift of salvation and the Lord represented in the Bible are quite different from the wish-granting and genie presented in "I Dream of Jeannie."

And, it would be a cop-out if, as I've stated numerous times before, the miracles (as in healings, deliverances and blessings) that directly have followed prayers for did NOT come to pass. But they did (and I'm talking about things I've observed and/or experienced). This is the flip side of the generalizations offered before about people dying in spite of prayers for their healing.

God doesn't have to explain His will to His creations. But that fact doesn't negate whether prayer "works." The Bible says that the prayers of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:16)
