I think it serves as a way to focus attention on an inanimate object during times of feeling personal discomfort.
Look where they are used the most, in public places when waiting for something... bus, drink at the bar, friend outside so-and-so... Perhaps it is an aid to feel less vulnerable in public. | |

Just the other day my wife texted me about picking up the car from the garage. I thought, well I'll give it a go and texted her back. So I started to puch away at my mobile and meant to type in I'm just picking it up now . But stupid me types in I'm just spanking it up now . 
I had pressed send before I could change it and, of course, my wife had to be with all her girlfriends when she got the message and showed them.

Not I. My wife and I used to use it all the time--back when we had a T-Mobile "family plan," we had a certain number of text messages included in our monthly service fee. I'm with AT&T Wireless now--I can receive unlimited messages for free, but outgoing messsages cost me ten cents each. Anyone who has my number and wants to text message me, feel free.
