That rule only applies if you are 23 or older... Well, at the old age of 25, I personally wouldn't want to be dating someone who's 16.  I'm not 16, I'm 19!! Don't u dare try to bring meback to being underage.  
Natsume: Yes we r at different stages in our lives, but our stages r similar. He acts like a 27 year old and I act much older than 19. I don't enjoy the same activities other girls my age enjoy. The club scene was never for me and I don't enjoy loud places. I would much rather have tea at a bookstore and talk religion and politics. So far Younes is the only guy I've met who was like that.
Additionally, he is in college and so am I. He's finished up his Masters and is getting his PhD...I am working toward my Bachelor's. So we both have our eyes on getting a degree of one form our another. And we both want to travel all over the world.
So I'd say. social inhibitions should go out the window if you meet someone whose age might seem a bit weird to most people. A year ago I probably wouldn't have said the same thing but I've evolved a lot since then, many of my views have shifted completely...

Now I can't pretend to know what Nat was trying to say but I saw something kind of Ironic in your last sentence. If in only one year you have evolved allot and many of your views have changed completely...then I suppose the same thing could happen again next year with you or him or both...right? just a thought. My dad is 56 and Grace is 40...but they started dating when Grace was 28... it's been hard on them at times only because she was at a totally differnt place in life then my dad but...they are still together so...hey.
