In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

Lovemachine I was gonna let it go but I can't, because you really got me mad with your comment and your little sigh, I don't understand what it was that offended you that you felt you had to make a comment like that. Are you offended that I took out a loan or are you offended that we made jokes about me not paying it back? I'm not looking for a fight I just would like to know.

Don't worry, Sweeny. They do try to work with you on finding a monthly payment you can afford. It's just like a car payment or anything else you make monthly payments on. If you start falling behind on payments, call them and work something out, don't put it off and hope they won't find you, cause if you don't contact them they will get hardass on you.

I went to school out of state for my undergrad work and had a student loan for that, and then I took out another loan for my graduate school. I probably owe about $50,000, actually. I worked while I did both degrees, but that only paid my living expenses, ya know? The way I look at it is that my education is going to last me a lifetime, and it was well worth the investment. Yes, it'll take me awhile to pay off, but I made that decision, and I agreed to pay it back so... shrug

At least the interest rates on student loans are low (4-6% now, I think), compared to, say, 18% on a credit card...

My comment and my sigh was directed at Paisley who suggested that you pay some back and tell them to go to hell.

I would also say the comment was also directed at the multitude of people I know who are not making efforts to pay them back. If you plan on paying back your loans I totally respect that but I do get mad at the people who don't because of my own experience.

When I applied for college my parents made to much money for me to qualify for financial aid yet unfortuanatly they would not help me pay for college. I did not want to sign up for loans because I did not want the burden of having to pay them off when I was done with school or even worse having to pay them off if somehow school didn't work out.

So basically I shopped around and found a reasonably priced state school as opposed to an out of state or private school because the cost difference was so drastic. Then basically to get through school debt free I worked my ass off. For 6 years I worked nights and often two or more jobs and paid for every last cent of my education out of my own pocket.

I took a job at UPS because they offered $3,000 a year in education assistance. All this night work sure made it hard to go to school full time but I ended up getting two degrees and I feel a certain amount of pride because I know I really earned them.

I'm not bragging but as you can tell I probably missed out on some of the fun of college because I was busy working. This was my choice but when I see people who made the other choice and kinda coasted through college partying and letting the government loan them the money (at a very, very, very low interest rate) and then when it comes time to pay the piper and they don't/won't it makes me kind of mad. Plus in tne end it's the taxpayer who foots the bill on this - which is ME.

I actually saw on the news that they are going after people who aren't repaying student loans HARD right now. They even arrested a number of people in hopes of getting the message out that they are not messing around. Credit card companies cannot have you arrested or wages garnished but the US government can.

Sweeny I really wasn't trying to offend you so if you were I truly apologize.

Lovemachine - I did the same thing, same parents and I also feel you with the pride thing.

As far as this thread goes, don't be a person who doesn't pay their debts. I've learned the value of good credit the hard way. Otherwise, make sure you pay all of your bills on time or it will effect everything in the future.

Insurance, buying a house, getting a reasonable interest rate on a car and even other things I can't think of right now.

More importantly, you'll never even be able to run and hide. They will find you because of your social security number.

I worked two jobs throughout school,I went to a state school,I NEVER partied during college in fact I was down right boring. My time was spent, studing, working and spending what little time I had left with my boyfriend.

I will pay my student loans back! It is just scary to think about owing somebody something. One of my biggest sins is pride and I hated having to ask for help, and I will be upset until it is all paid off.

To all of those who did not get it, I started this thread as a joke!
