Start slowly. First lay off of pork for a couple of months. Then add beef to the list. Once you get used to that, add turkey and chicken. After a while of not eating those things, the smell will start to make you sick. If you are strong enough, leave fish alone. That worked for me anyway. There are many "fake meats" out there. They have vegetarian "pepperoni" and soy cheese so you can still have pizza. Actually now with all of the meat alternatives, it's not really so hard. They even have veggie corn-dogs. I didn't think I would ever have a corn-dog again.

I can stay away from fish. No problem. I've never tried or heard of a pepporoni substitute. It's gonna take some hard work to walk away from the real thing! I just want to make clear that I think fish and turkey, etc..are considered meat. It's flesh. I can't stand when people cll themselves vegetarians but eat "poultry". That's just me though. Not sure if I could become a vegan though. Why does life have to be so hard?!

Get online and find some tofu and soy based recipes. You can make some mad mexican and spanish dishes with tofu and tempurah. Its all about the seasonings. I eat some meat but to be honest, I prefer he veggie foods. They feel better and you can do so much more with the flavor. Go to PETA.com for some free kits on going veggie!

Thanks Camille. I was wondering about that. But I just don't want to see or read about the slaughtered animals. I know, it's hypocritical..but I will check that out! Thank You!

You and I are in the same boat! I want to become a vegetarian as well, but don't know where to begin. I think I might want to reach a stable weight first.

Hi Chico319,

It's a tough call. Becoming vegetarian later in life (in adulthood, I mean) is obviously difficult because you've grown up eating meat. It comes down to making a choice between the food that you like and food that fits with your beliefs and moral values. If you are really into the idea of vegetarianism, and you can find a vegetarian diet that suits your taste-buds, suits your health, suits your lifestyle, as well as your conscience - you'll be fine. However if you constantly feel that you are "depriving" yourself of something you really enjoyed, it may be difficult for you.

I'm lucky in that I've been a vegetarian for almost all of my life - for me it is the most natural way to live and I never felt I was missing anything - and even if I did, I reckon my closely held vegetarian beliefs would override my palette anyway.

I have seen quite a few people choosing vegetarianism late in life (sometimes for health reasons, sometimes for moral reasons) and fail. Frequently it is because they drop meat very suddenly, but haven't really worked out what vegetarian food they really enjoy. You have to really find vegetarian dishes that you enjoy, and fit them into your lifestyle... so if you normally go for pizza with your friends on a Friday night, can you still enjoy it if there's no meat on top? If you love eating hamburgers after a movie, could you still enjoy yourself if you are eating something vegetarian?

Anyway the good news is that there's quite a large number of vegetarians here on the Org who can probably give you good advice and support if you decide to give it a try. It certainly isn't something to be taken lightly - it is a huge lifestyle-changing decision and if you want to be successful in making the change, it'll take a bit of work.

Ultimately though, I think it a very rewarding way to live and you won't regret it, I'm sure. Best of luck!

Ok, you're gonna have to come over and try my pizza. I use the vegironi and it's pretty good! Not as greasy, but still very flavorful.

Oh, and about the lack of protein, you can eat all kinds of beans, nuts and cheeses to compensate. I'm not a veggie anymore, but I stay away from red meats.

Can vegetarians eat duck? Because some vegetarians eat fish, and ducks are semi submerged and send allot of time in the water!

What a cheery thread that would be. Hi Bliss, have any of your friends or relitives been eaten by vegetarians?

It is hard. Not sure if I'll ever be able to. Going to try though. I guess it's like second nature, or pavlov's dog.. I smell the meat cooking and automatically drooling I did try a tofu something or rather once. I think it was a lasagne. It wasn't bad, just not to flavourful!
