I'd say no, don't do it.

I think it's absolutely wacky that some believe it's "cool" to have a permanent mark placed on their body as a means of self-expression. I mean really, it's not like you're buying "fine art" for your skin. If Francis Bacon or Picasso were alive and available as a tattoo artists, I'd kinda understand the desire to have a permanent mark from someone of their artistic stature. Generally, the stuff looks ridiculous, amateurish and derivative, and it leaves the wearer with greatly diminished credibility in the world of mature adults - that place where we inevitably spend most of our lives.

Most people spend far less time deciding to get one of these markers of immaturity than they do trying to have them removed down the road. Why not try a temporary removable tattoo first? Better yet, find ways to express your individuality that are just a little more original and less faddish.

Good luck! See you in the adult world soon...

Don't get anything too cliched. For example I have a nice Japanese kanji tattoo that I got done years ago in Japan, but since then it got "trendy" for idiots to get oriental characters as tattoos. I don't regret getting mine, but it's a bit too common now. Same goes for fucking roses, or dolphins, or celtic knotwork etc. Try to avoid anything too cheesy smile

I've been thinking about getting one too. I don't know what to tell ya. I think it would look good now but do I want to be 50 and have one or 80? I'm a teacher to and I dont think that visable tattos in the classroom looks real good.I've been back and forth for a month or two over it.You just have to consider that this is something that will be with you forever. Are you ready to make that kind of commitment?

Some people in Japan get whole body works done, and then after they die, they have thier skin removed, stretched out, and preserved under glass so their tattoos will still be around after they are gone. There is a whole museum of full-body tattoos. I'd consider that art.

I am going to get my family crest tattooed on me sooner or later, with my sisters - I'm gonna be part of my family forever, so I know I'll always want it. I'm just unsure of where to get it. It won't be very big - probably the size of a half dollar, in black.

Thanks to everyone of you who posted!
Yes..I thought the same thing. If I have to ask, then perhaps I shouldn't. But I've been thinking about it for years. And the designs are ones that I love and wouldn't mind having.I know one thing , if it's a name, it'll be my name!! I know about 3 people who have had to a cover up because they put their spouses name on. It's seems like a curse! One of them had eachother's name done in Japanese; and later said, "Well, unless you can read japanese it could stand for anything!" Ummm no! Needlss to say all these people have divorced or split up! rolleyes I don't know what's actually holding me back. I think hearing "YOU BETTER NOT MARK UP YOUR BODY!(fill in explitives here)" in spanish and english for the millionth time may have done some psychological damage as well
After reading this, I'm leaning towards a single letter, a treble clef, or 'chico'. Now about body piercing... lol
Thanks guys! hug

I have been contimplating getting a tattoo. For those of you with tattoos..what advice would you give? I hear some people regret it. Or once you get one you'll want another. Make sure the place is liscensed and uses clean needles, tattoo colour fading, price..etc. There are a couple ideas I have for a tattoo and where on my body to put it. But I would like your opinions or experiences good or bad on tattoos.
A couple ideas are..

1. a treble clef on my arm
2. my last name in old english..maybe on my shoulder
3. a single initial on the back of my neck
4. praying hands with roses and the rosary hanging.
5. a merman or a mermaid...a small one my hip.

I was thinking about a revised version of my profile pic.(look for yourselves wink) Just the Merman and Mermaid. But I'm sure that would be costly and it would take up a lot of skin area! lol
Thanks in advance, for your advice!

i know someone who's working on covering her entire body in tattoos, some porno too. she's actually really gorgeous, and the tattoos are interesting no doubt.

but one of my landlords was like that, an old guy. not mind you, inks have changed in years since then, yet still the sight of those tattoos, blurred and wrinkled together, dim with age and stretched by years of weight gain and loss, well. . . let's say i decided i'll stick with henna dye for the less permanent effect

That guy's name is Cat. He has had more body manipulations done than anyone else in the world. He had chin, cheek, and forhead implants put in so he could look more cat-like. He also has those whiskers surgically sewn into his cheeks, and had his teeth filed to points. And then the tattoing of course. I think he had his ears done to be pointy cat ears as well.
