Hey fellow .Orgers...I'm planning on taking the GRE later this summer, and would GREATLY appreciate any advice that you might be able to give me. If you've taken the GRE in the past, I could really use your words of wisdom. Thanks!!!

if you suffer from test anxiety, request a pair of ear plugs and a seat at the rear of the room. Do so before they assign a locker to you for your belongings. The locker number corresponds with the assigned pc you will be using. I was placed right next to the door...I didn't do very well, suffice to say..

be sure to prepare an outline for your timed writings before you begin. Things become a bit stressful and you might have a difficult time organizing your thoughts if you simply begin writing. finally, know as many of the words as possible, as this will assist you in the rest of the exam. The math isn't that difficult. I hate math and I performed better in that area than the verbal..

my advice is to bring your own twelvepack. they won't have any there and you're bound to get thirsty.

I haven't taken the GRE (I took the LSAT instead, since I went to law school), but I think the Princeton Review does the best test preparation books.

Anyway...thanks for the advice so far! I picked up the Princeton review, and the GRE looks almost deceptively easy based upon that impression. Is this shit even all that tough?

i've taken many national standardized test, but not the gre. back in 1998, i took the mcats for med school and step 1 & step 2 of the usmle (united states medical licensing exam).

for the mcats i took a kaplan course. it cost $1000. i don't think i really got my moneys worth. basically, they review what you have already learned in the past. they really don't have time to teach you a lot that you don't already know or have never understood. these courses are very good if you are not self-disciplined enough to maintain a good self-directed study plan.

i think that i could have done just as well on the mcats if i bought review books and reviewed them on my own. to prepare for the usmle's, i did just that, and scored very well.

Thanks man...a good friend of mine took KAPLAN shit for the GRE, and said it was well worth it if one is not good at standardized tests. I happen to do pretty well with them, so I'm not concerned. The past few months, I've been spending most of my free time going over math I haven't used for years and brushing up on some vocabulary terms. I think I can do fine without KAPLAN.

Not to mention that I don't have $1000 to spend on this shit when I'm trying to save for a wedding!
