I know a great deal about western art history from about the high renaissance (early 1500's) through abstract expressionism (Late 1940's-early 1950's). I especially like the French romanticism of Gericault and Delacroix in the early 1800's.

I guess the one thing I know most about is [classical]
literature. Mainly about the writers, what they wrote,
if it's any good or not, the characters in their books
the different styles of writing. Their lives, the other
writers and artists they hung out with. I have the same
interest with painters, especially the whole clique who
lived and painted in France and hung out with all the
other artists over there. I don't know too much about
those yet but it fascinates me.

Which era are you talking about? The impressionists? Monet, Manet, Renoir and Degas?

Mainly the people who lived at the same time as Van Gogh;
Cézanne, Gauguin, Manet, Monet, Toulouse Lautrec, Pisarro,
Seurat, Renoir, Signac. But not just the painters, also
people like Camille Claudel, Claude DeBussy, Rimbaud and
Verlaine etc etc. The whole era and environment, the strive
for change and the incredible interaction between those
people. Artists of this day and age don't have contacts and
communities like those anymore.

Plus the fact that the world was still subject to change at
that time. There were so many things to discover or to set
a standard or new standards for. It's all wildly fascinating
and once you study one of them, you get so many references
to the work of others of them that you can just jump from
one to the other and together they form this rich and quite
magnificent tapestry.

It always sounds selfabsorbed to talk about art imo, so I
don't like talking about it that much but I do enjoy just
reading about it for myself and my own pleasure. Or to watch
documentaries about this era on television or look up info
about it on the internet.

IstenSzek post makes me think that recently there was a Mr France contest and at a moment there was a questionnaire to know their culture level one of those "beautiful" guys was asked "who painted La Joconde?"
and he answered V Van Gogh

La Joconde, that's the Mona Lisa, right? It's what they
call her in France isn't it?

Did everyone gasp and looked shocked when he said it was
a painting by Vincent?
