AMERICANS

Does it bother you when foreigners speak another language around you?

No...not really.

Unless, of course, if while they're talking they stop, look at me and laugh then I have to make the vain and paranoid assumption that they're talking about me.

other than that I just don't give a shit.

Not really. I respect others and there languages. That is what makes the human race so beautifull!!!
What I don't like is when they look at you like your stupid cause you don't know what they are saying... Hello!!! You came to America...learn english!!! I would never move somewhere and expect them to learn my language for me.

I've been meaning to learn hmong - we have quite a few here and I think they're great people. There aren't too many hmong language cd-roms on the shelves though (business venture for some smart person)

Am I the only one who will say yes it bothers me? I don't know if they're talking shit about me or what. I think it's rude. I speak Japanese and if I was in Japan and around people who didn't know English, I wouldn't speakinf English to a friend "just because" unless they knew absolutely no Japanese. It's just rude

What if you only knew how to speak in English and you and a friend went to France. What would you two speak then?

i agree with this, i speak both french and english as my first languages. When i'm with and english friend around french people we always speak in french, even if it's wierd for us to speak together in a language we don't usually speak to eachother with.
i don't like to be sitting with people who are saying things i don't understand so i don't do it to others. i also think its rude, its as if you are purposly excluding someone from the conversation.
however if you're just talking about people in the street or at the table next you, etc... i don't mind at all. i even find it quite nice to hear.

hmmm That's very interesting. I guess could see how some folks think it's rude.
