Attendance...

I wanted to pay props to a kid I just read about in the nespaper. He had perfect attendance through all 13 years of school and it reminded me of me a little bit. The kid goes to my old high school and while I didn't have perfect attendance k-12 I did have perfect attendance in high school which I am quite proud of.

I probably only missed 2 or 3 days in the the 13 years of school and I only missed a few classes in college as well.

OAKDALE: Senior scores a perfect 13 in yearly attendance
BY JENNIFER JEFFERSON

"James Flaherty?"

"Present."

That's an exchange that's been repeated regularly for Flaherty, 18, a senior at Tartan High School in Oakdale.

Today, he completes his 13-year perfect school attendance record, which dates to kindergarten.

How'd he do it?

Good health, according to his mother, Nancy Flaherty. "He's a very, very healthy child. He was never sick."

A stay-at-home mother in Oakdale, she also concludes that it must be much harder for kids to fake being sick when their mom is around the house during the day.

Skipping school to go elsewhere also was out of the question, James Flaherty says.

The only thing he did skip was the graduating class's traditional Senior Skip Day.

Flaherty insists that his relatively rare achievement wasn't anything he set out to do.

"Only in the last two years I got serious (about perfect attendance)," he says. His friends, he says, have been making the perfect-attendance goal a bigger deal than he has.

"They think it's cool," he says.

His brother, Nathan, a senior at Carleton College in Northfield, and his sister, Nicole, a junior at the University of Minnesota in Duluth, missed about 15 days combined during their 13-year pre-college academic careers, their mom says.

James Flaherty attended Castle Elementary School and Maplewood Middle School and received a certificate for his perfect attendance at both schools.

He took part in his high school choir and likes to play guitar in his spare time.

Flaherty will attend University of Minnesota in Duluth to study criminology, but he's already hedging his bets.

"I don't know if I'll continue my record in college," Flaherty says.

I would like to add that I think the ability to show up is a very, very important trait in people. People who you absolutely know are going to show up are the people who are going to be successful in this world and are the people I want to be associated with.

I can't tell you how much I am put off by people who are constantly calling in sick to work 5, 10 or even 15 times a year or constantly skipping classes or whatever. In my mind these people cannot be counted on.

I realize that people occasionally get sick, but I would venture that at least 75 percent of the time the sickness was either self-inflicted (drinking) or pretty damn minor. There are some people who think that the tiniest little ailment in the morning is reason to call in sick, but come on...nobody feels great in the morning.

I have a sister who is constantly calling in sick to work and then later the same night going out and playing softball or whatever. She will say she was sick, but how sick could you be if 8 hours later you are able to play?

Then you wouldn't want to be associated with me.

I had horrible attendance in school--I was a sickly kid. One year when report cards were being given out on the last day I really thought I was going to be left back. For all my bad attendance I never seemed to get far behind in schoolwork and maintained pretty decent grades.
