Why Do Parents Give Their Kids Strange Names?

With the new millenium, and even before the new millenium came, this seems to be a rapidly spreading trend. I guess people are sick of the standard names (John, Mary, etc.) so they call their kids these wacko names that are not even attractive. sad

I know of this married woman who had a baby last year, and she and her husband named the baby girl Delaney! That has got to be the UGLIEST name I've ever heard, since to me, it sounds like the name of a car or something. omfg Now I know how cruel kids can be, since I was picked on a lot as a kid, and when this little girl starts school, she'd better be tough to fight off the school bullies when they tease her about her unusual name. I certainly would not want to give my kid some of these newfangled names that have been surfacing lately. rolleyes
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Well I named my girls names that were not common since I have a very common name. In my 6th grade class there we six of us with the same name. To top it off I married a man with a common name to. My older daughter's name is relatively popular but spelled differently my baby girls name is also popular but only in certain cultures.

Anxiety

I remember once when Frank Zappa was being interviewed on a talk show, and the host (I forget who it was) asked Zappa why he chose to give his kids weird names like "Dweezil" and "Moon Unit".

Zappa's answer was classic:

"Well, consider the beauty in a name like RALPH."
