REDFEATHERS

Everyones humour varies, or it wouldnt be funny if we all laughed at the same thing would we? Some of the best humour is from unfortuante situations, someone falling over, hurting themselves etc, sme sick humour isnt sick to one, but is to another. I personally get offended when people blaspheme or really have a dig at God or Jesus, that is just me, but I suppose I offend people too in my humour. sad

An example, my thread today - nobody liked it. bawl

The truth: for me, it depends upon the clients I"ve been seeing lately, and when/how the "offensive" person says something.

What I mean by this is: if I know the person who makes the comment has a good heart, but has just picked bad timing or is oblivious to another's pain, I cut mucho slack. I've done the same, after all, using "gallow's humor" to survive.

But some days I hear such tragic, heartbreaking stuff from my clients and I get so worried and upset for them, that I am more easily offended. For example, yesterday a client of mine who is originally from Cambodia told me her marriage had been forced because the man had raped her and the families wanted to avoid the "dishonor". While they were married, he beat her and rarely allowed her to leave the house, until finally she left him, just ran away. Her life is much, much better--she is with another man now, is pregnant with their child, has a job, is learning English and making friends for the first time. But now the ex is refusing to allow her to see their children (he has custody because when she left, she couldn't support them financially) and telephoning her at work telling her he hopes her baby is born breech, or dies inside of her, that he's going to wait for her in the parking lot and kill her, etc.

My point: after hearing a story like that, for several hours I may be more sensitive to "jokes" about rape or domestic violence. Seeing it face to face wipes out the humor for me...
