It's still legal tender today, but you wouldn't want to spend it, as the collector's value exceeds the face value. Also, I believe that banks are supposed to send any $500/$1,000/$5,000/$10,000 notes they receive to the Federal Reserve, where they are destroyed.

I've heard of proposals to bring back the $500 note, since $500 really isn't that much money these days, thanks to inflation, but I don't see it happening, at least not in the near future.
