It might*...that is why the buck stops with the man in the mirror.

No matter how one views another's opinion...to "attack" it
rather than discuss it puts the "intolerance title" on the attacker.

Oh, then ones can pass the title back and forth as they attack one another.

When we can learn self control, sandwiched with an honest
self-appraisal and a genuine respect for our fellow man,
I suppose we will have learned the art of discussion.

Perhaps then an exchange of knowledge based on our various pespectives
due to our varied experiences can occur.

This knowledge may then lead to true tolerance.

*Hypocrisy is demonstrated by professing the virtues of an ethic that you do not adhere to.

EDIT: added a definition to help out.

hypocrisy

n 1: an expression of agreement that is not supported by real conviction [syn: lip service] 2: insincerity by virtue of pretending to have qualities or beliefs that you do not really have.

---

So, being intolerant of people who you believe to be intolerant is hypocritical in that you say that you dislike intolerance and then turn around and criticize them for being intolerant, thereby being intolerant yourself.

I don't think it's ironic at all, it's just good common sense thinkin'.

If you're intolerant of those whose views you claim to detest, then you're as much the problem as you think they are. If you're able to enter a respectful dialog with that person and walk away from it no worse for wear, chances are you've learned something and they have too.

I am way ahead of you with this definition...yet
sincerity and hypocrisy cannot sit in the same chair,
So if an intolerant person is sincere in his beliefs
that another is intolerant yet believing himself NOT...
he is not a hypocrite...JUST MISTAKEN.

Awareness must be present.

I am saying that you are not sincere if you are intolerant of people that you believe to be intolerant. How can you sincerely criticize someone for being intolerant and state how bad they are? Being intolerant of someone for their perceived intolerance is still intolerance and therefore makes the one who is criticizing the one that they believe to be intolerant a hypocrite.

I do see what you are saying though, as you have a fine concept.

I actually had this same topic discussion back on P.org v.1 when TRC came out...so many were blasting Prince for being "intolerant" as well as blasting all of the JW religion for being so...and I pointed out that being intolerant of intolerance is a bit hypocritical...tolerance is only tolerance when it's applied towards something you completely disagree with...

SensualMelody said: sincerity and hypocrisy cannot sit in the same chair

Actually, not only can they both sit in the same chair, it's almost a pre-requesite that they do...

You have to be sincere in the beliefs which you are actually contradicting with your actions in order to be hypocritical...if you're not being sincere, then you're not being hypocritical, you're being purposefully contrarian (sumthin' I kinda know a lil about..heh)...

I guess I am just to giving...
I belive most people do the best they can with what they got.

And so I guess one can be sincerely hypocritical
Or
hypocritically sincere.

Whatever....and that's why people shouldn't fight.
There's nothing to fight about.

I believe most people do the best with what they've got as well...I guess I also believe that most people can occasionally be hypocritical while doing so.

Perhaps it's simply a matter of semantics...lol..."hypocrite" is such a negative word/concept, that we find it hard to label someone as being hypocritical if we know they're not purposefully being so...

So howzabout this:

Contrarian: When your words and actions are in unison, but are both purposefully at odds with what your true beliefs tend to be.

Hypocritical: When you sincerely feel others should follow a life philosophy that you feel you yourself don't have to follow.

Contradictory: When you sincerely feel everyone, including yourself, should follow a certain life philosophy, yet are unaware on those occastions when you do not.

but anyway, let's get back to the point: i fucking hate those people who are all intolerant, do you hear me? i simply WILL NOT TOLERATE THEM!!!

the best way to demonstrate your lack of tolerance for those intolerants is to tolerate the motherfuckers.

this thread makes me feel like maybe i'm not crazy after all.
