So I've gone on several dates with a big shot from Warner Bros and...

eventually the topic of Prince came up and this dude instantly blurted out: "Oh...Prince he's broke...desperate and very depressed."

hmm

I asked him how he knew this. He said:"everybody at work knows this." Ok then, I'm thinking, since everybody knows it...

I like the dude and all but I just got a little annoyed at his lack of knowledge...the image of Prince is just not that good anymore is it?

I did ask him if there were plans on DVD releases, remasters etc. and he said that it all has to do with "shelf space." And he said: "Prince just does not move enough units to justify the use store shelve space."

I'm dating someone from the evil empire...

you're annoyed at him because Prince's image? what lack of knowledge did he present? you're lucky he isn't interested in you because of your fanaticism.

try this...dating someone and not having Prince on your mind, you might find happiness.

Prince is "broke, desperate and very depressed", huh??...

That no doubt explains why he's decided to go the commercialism route lately with releases like TRC, ONA, Xpectation and N.E.W.S...it also 'splains why he charging $25 for club membership this year instead of $100...

And I'm sure the "One Nite Alone" tour didn't make him a dime, either...

And dint everyone constantly talk about how unhappy Prince seemed during the soundchecks they attended??...

I think they guy's onto something..!! :O

You know, I did mention the ONA tour, TRC and all...and he was quite surprised. He said he didn't even know Prince still performed live.

Shmaybe "everyone" in his office is talking about the "Prince" of 1998...lol...I mean, those inter-office memos updating everyone on Prince's musical and financial status take awhile to make the rounds..

How would anyone inside Warner Bros. know Prince's current financial status? That's ridiculous. Sounds like they're pretty bitter about losing their cash cow. I can say that I was compensated well for the brief employment stint I had in 2001, and my accommodations and airfare were also covered by P.P.

P.S. Hi Resistor! Hope you're doing well!

Prince stopped being a "cash cow" for Warner Brothers years before they finally released him.

Unfortunately, I think that is the attitude that a lot of people have about Prince. My good friends are somewhat aware of what Prince does, because u can't know me and not know about Prince, but when Prince comes up in larger circles, most people are usually surprised that he tours and has released several albums in the past five years.

And I imagine that attitude definitely prevails in terms of DVDs and remasters. Because if WB thought they could make a buck off of it, they would do it. Without Prince having a higher profile, it won't happen.

True. I didn't mean to imply otherwise, just to illustrate that if "everyone at the office knows this," several years after Prince left and several years after he was that "cash cow," there is a lingering bitterness. Get over it, already, damn!

you honestly don't think the decrease in membership is because he's rolling in moolah and wants to pass the savings down to his fans do you? or might it be because he isn't offering a tangible product, merely entrance to a website? I believe the latter is more of a reason than the former.

as for his album releases, neccesity, not choice is more of an explanation for his choice in distribution.

And dint everyone constantly talk about how unhappy Prince seemed during the soundchecks they attended??...

granted it's a stretch to say he's depressed, but Prince is a performer and has the ability to put on any face he wants. more than likely he is not going to come out on stage moping, even if he does feel that way.

No, what I meant was that if Prince was "broke and desperate", he'd stick with the $100 club fee, and make 4 times as much $$$ money...

as for his album releases, neccesity, not choice is more of an explanation for his choice in distribution.

??...'K, I read that a few times, not sure what yer sayin'...lol. I think, pure and simple, that personal artistic desires are behind the likes of TRC and Xpectation, not necessity...not to mention that I think even the online fan base's comments about what they like and what they don't has had some effect...Again, if Prince were "desparate and broke" (which everyone knows he is...lol), we'd be seeing Rave Un2-type CDs being hawked left and right...bottom line: Prince's artistic and business decisions do not show evidence of a desparate and broke performer. Quite the contrary, actually...

True...but I'll take the seemingly sincere and honest happiness Prince showed during soundchecks and question & answer sessions, over what the receptionist over at Warner Bros. supposedly "knows"... rolleyes

Warners most likely WANTS to remaster the old albums but they know they can't do it without Prince's help. So,it's easy to see why they're so bitter.
