Children, even young ones are capable of understanding things besides force...I am a firm believer in the fact that those who use spanking or other fear based physical dicipline methods severly lack imagination and/or perseverance. Depending on the age and personality type of the child, there are countless other methods of dicipline. Spanking is a cop out.
Grown adults do not make a habit for of hitting/caning/paddling people for simple infractions (at least not in the us)...things have consequences yes, but only in extreme situations does it escalate to violence in adult situations. At least not the legal kind anyway.

There's a difference between beating a kid to oblivion and a little crack on the butt to jar the child and get its attention. Yelling at a child can possibly have damaging emotional consequences, should we ban that too?

If you're in line at the checkout with your kid in the buggy, and it starts throwing a fit grabbing items off the shelf and throwing them at the person in front of you, screaming at the top of its lungs, what are you going to say or do to it that would make it stop, and let the kid know that that's wrong?

People have been sheltered.

It's certainly NOT that every parent who
feels they have to resort to a spanking
is inept, or lacks patience.

The Nancy Reagan meek and mild
"Just Say No" rhetoric didn't
work with drugs, and "Timeout" sure
as hell won't work for all kids either.

There's a world of different dynamics happening
in different families across the world.
Just like the "Timeout"/"Just Say No" people
aren't privy to what's going on in someone
else's family, the parents/guardians of kids
who use a spanking as a last resort don't
necessarily know what's going on in
the "Timeout" family either.

The one method fits all mentality for kids
DOES NOT WORK FOR ALL KIDS.

Abuse comes in many forms, and doesn't
come from a mere spanking...it's also emotional
and verbal. It's only abuse when it's taken
too far. And I know some think a mere spanking
is ALWAYS taking it too far. This
spanking is bad mentality is a relatively
new phenomenon that doesn't address the more
likely real forms of abuse that goes on even more,
and is just another way for the local government
to keep their noses in someone else's private business.
And once that mentality came into vogue
I've noticed that kids have gotten more violent
than ever before. I don't believe there's
anything ironic about that either.

The "authorities" don't always exhibit the rational
common sense that they preach either. Who the hell
are they to judge?

You see, THIS is why I'm reluctant to have a baby. Shit like that just scares me because it's true.

It is completely obvious that you have never had

children.

You are sooo talking out your mary poppins ass!!!

Each child is different ...my son I have never had to lay a

hand on...my daughter however pushes things to the spank

me stage at least once a month!! both are great kids,

neither have ever been abused, they just require different

reinforcement..

Do me a favor and wait until you have raised a child before

condemning the methods of those of us that have...

Speak on what you know and stfu on shit you have no clue.

...thought ya knew!!!...

I was sorta thinking the same thing Lisa. This is more of a class issue than race. Sometimes we confuse issues of classism and poverty issues and race although there maybe some underlying issues involving race.
