I've known about this procedure for quite some time, but I wasn't aware that's become the "latest piercing rage." (OTOH, the article notes that "only about 2,000 people in the Western world" have had it done... hardly sounds like much of a rage to me.)

This is one body modification on which I'll pass, thanks. Not interested.

As for the 19-year-old guy whose parents gave him the $500 to get it done... he must be an only child.

I've seen 2 people with this. One of them was done on purpose, the other one had 3 piercings in his tongue and it split on it's own. In any case they're both gross!
