Why does my automobile speedometer go up to 120 mph?

Seriously, it's just not right for automotive dealers to have speedometers that have 120 mph when we can not leagally drive at that speed. Just another way to make more money from all the suckers speeding. hmph!

I challenged it once at 85mph and a trooper pulled me ova. He wanted to put me in jail if I didn't pay a $300 speeding ticket. That happened a long time ago, but I would have loved to have given the ticket to General Motors and said here I think this is yours. lol

You know Tonguebox, I would think that it would be great for a class action lawsuit! I spend a fortune on a vehicle and I am entitled to see if it indeed actually does work! So I push the 120 and an officer misunderstands my intentions! Naturally I am forced to repeat the test at a later date as I need to ascertain that I haven't been ripped off right? DAMNED if an officer doesn't bust me that and every preceding time I attempt to test it out. As a matter of fact, I am yet to ascertain if I was ripped off or not!
pissed Maybe we should consult Matt as to whether or not we have a case?

Heh... well, I've worked on class actions. My professional opinion? You don't have a case. smile

At one time, there was a federal statute/regulation prohibiting speedometers that went past 85 mph. I'm not sure why that got repealed.

What I find interesting is that my Miata's speedometer goes up to 140 mph... a stock Miata isn't capable of that speed (unless, perhaps, you drive it off a cliff).

OK, now something NEEDS to be done with the automobile manufactures, this isn't right. FALSE information by the car dealers. Well that isn't new either. lol

I'm thinking I should go to a car dealer and ask to test drive a car and take it on a highway and say let's see if this speedometer can actually go up to 120 mph. Since your company designed and installed it then it should work. You don't have any problems with that do you! Punch it and go and watch the salesman turn green. mr.green lol Then give the ticket to him.

It goes to high numbers so that you will feel like a race car driver. Your adrenaline will surge at the very sight of 120 on your speedometer... some cars have 150 or more on there... it is a psychological thing.

As I have been clocked at 114 before (Vegas run) I would have to say it was possible in my 3000GT.

The worth of a person is so easily judged by the speed of their car.

Correction... it goes up to 150 mph. Although the highest number on the gauge is "140," there are additional marks that extend the range up to 150. Again, there's no way the car is going to go that fast with the stock engine.

But it does make your cock feel big looking at 150 on there!

my impression of why cars have a top speed way over the acceptable speed limit is two-fold.
1) if my car's absolute top speed is 140, then i can comfortably drive 70-80. because you don't want to drive your car at its top speed for long distances, otherwise, you'll burn its motor up.
2) the easiest way to get decent performance and acceleration, is to give the car a high end top speed. there are other ways to do that, but it requires other devices on the engine that run up the price. that way the car will accelerate to get on the highway without having to have a 2 mile entrance ramp to build up speed.

and, oh by the way, this is coming from someone who drives a 1987 nissan whose top speed is maybe 90 on a good day, going down hill
