why is it that every time a brother reaches a certain status in his career, he always want to drop the sista and date outside of his race? It's been said that us sistahs are loosing are men 2 other women and if this is true we need to get our ish together, cuz I'm getting real tired of hearing a succesful half decent brother say "I don't date black women". You know we've seen this happen plenty of times, I can name a numerous amont of celebs who are guilty of this (Dennis Rodman to name a few). It's as almost if once they reach to a certain level of success, they feel as if they to good for a sista and a white girl is like they're trophee. I mean it's very seldomly you hear about a white celeb dating about a black woman after he reach his fame and fortune, it was only rumored that Justin Timberlake went out with Janet and J LO got Ben Affelck azz whipped and she mind as well be a sista smile, but if a succesful white guy did end up with a black woman, it's as almost as if it's a scandoul and people are hush hush about it. Which makes no damn sense, but if it was a brother dating a white girl, you never get enough of hearing about it all over the news. I mean even my dear Prince is guilty of it and all I want to know is , why is this?

I think that the most expected and accepted answer for "minorities" in America would be that to date a white woman in America means that you have achieved a certain amount of success as screwed up as it sounds. I share some of your sentiments but in my case, in regards to Asian women since I am an Asian man. I do find it distressing when I see Asian females try everything under the sun to assimilate themselves into white society. For example, keeping their hair in various blonde states ALL the time, wearing blue or green contacts in their eyes ALL thie time, speaking in an ultraWASPish manner ALL the time. But I think what bothers me most is when they see another Asian coming towards them on the street or meeting them in a room and acting like we're not there or worse yet like they are somehow superior.

I think it stems from an uncomfortability with their self-image or worth. Everytime these women see another Asian who isn't trying to be "white", it reminds them of what they're running away from: their own culture that they deem to be lacking in some way.

Now I have no problems with Asian women who date white men. I have problems with Asian women who date white men exclusively based on the notion that total immersion into white culture automatically elevates oneself to a higher societal status.
These wannabe coconut hoes can kiss my brown ass kisses

Unfortunately, I can't speak for Black Men they'll have to tell you themselves. But I think since all I can do is focus on myself, making sure I'm okay with my own life and that I'm proud of my own culture, everything's okay.

Lisa, I know where you are coming from. But back in the day, I'd use to say, those that got them desire them. (regarding black men with white women). But now, I've realized that love don't come in a certain color. To say, I ONLY date a certain color is, in my opinion an issue unanalyzed and unanswered. Right now, for me it doesn't matter what color you are just as long as you got some class about yourself. That seems to be really hard to find in men these days, in any color -- class and intelligence.

Public Enemy... from Fear of a Black Planet:

Pollywanacraka

She wants a lover right now
But not no brother
Her man gotta have a lotta money
To get under her cover
Now she's a fine sister
But up here she's missin' it
She says she wanna learn about life
No old black bull shit
At the age of 15 a brother gave her a baby
She's 19 now and it drover her crazy
And now everytime
She turns around
All the people in the neighborhood
Look and get mand and sing

CHORUS

Meet Mr. Succesful
I guess he's blessed yeah
But he happens to be a brother
Who only wants blue eyes and blonde hair
Now this young mister
He don't like sisters
He couldn't find that special one
He know why he missed her
He says sisters wasn't good enuff
They only wanted his green stuff
That's why everytime he turned
Around all the people
In the neighborhood
Looked and got mad
And sang

CHORUS

I try to tell my people
There should not be any hatred
For a brother or a sister
Whose opposite race they've mated
No man is God
And God put us all here (yeah)
But this system has no wisdom
The devil split us in pairs
And taught us White is good, Black is bad
And Black and White is still too bad
That's why everytime I turn around
All the people in my neighborhood
Look mad and sing..

.....

True. He needs to have an open mind. This generation of brothas is alot better than in the past. You don't see it half as much. And you see sistas liking dark skinned brothas too. Wesley and Teye diggs get play that wouldn't have happened in the 80's. Sistas would have avoided them.

why is it that every time a brother reaches a certain status in his career, he always want to drop the sista and date outside of his race?

Brotha here, moderately successful, and dating a sista! For three years no less! Although I don't discriminate (if I find a woman attractive, intelligent, etc., race should not be a factor), I have found that I am just attracted to sistas for the most part. I do find it kind of ridiculous when black men, who have reached a certain level of success, find that they need to date/marry a white woman for whatever reason. I would like to think that it's because they are in love, but that would be naive. My feeling is that there are many, many beautiful, smart, successul sistas out there! But, one caveat; I have found that due to the perception that there are no good black men, or all the good ones go for white/asian/latino, etc., sistas get an attitude...and I can't say that I blame them. For instance, I have been told often, after becoming friends or more with sistas, that they initially thought that I dated white exclusively. They said I have a "look." So much so that they said that they would have passed my ass up on the street had they just seen me walking. And I'm a damn good looking brotha! So that is one of the things that I have found...sistas make sweeping generalizations about brothas before they get to know them. I think that if sistas fought back the urge to judge a brotha before getting to know him, they would find that there are a lot more out there then they think!
Just my two cents. wink

no no no!
Colors don't matter. size does.

I know it don't matter, but I've seen this happen so many times, I even had a guy told me he doesn't date black women, he was darker then I was, The way I see it is, if you deny your own race it's form of self hatred. I just don't get it at all disbelief

If a brotha actualy goes to the poitn of telling a sista that he doesn't date sistas, then he is lacking in some dept. Confidence, ego, what have you. This is what I have found in "brothas" who actually state that they don't date sistas. And if that is his attitude, you're too good for his punk ass. wink

Unfortunately, I can't speak for Black Men they'll have to tell you themselves. But I think since all I can do is focus on myself, making sure I'm okay with my own life and that I'm proud of my own culture, everything's okay.

Wow...interesting coming from an Asian man. Never asked one about this, but living in San Francisco, I see this all the time...it's almost in your face that many, many Asian women are trying their damndest to blend into white society. I see way more Asian women/whtie men couples then Asian women/Asian men. At one point I was wondering if trying to be white instead of Asian was something that they were bought up to do. I mean, do you feel that they are actually trying to suppress their culture? Trying to blend in as best they can? I've been wondering about this since I moved to SF...

And another thing, I don't think this is necessarily always a status thing when it comes to one or both making it. I've seen plenty of poor and working class Black/White relationships and marriages.

I actually brought this issue up with an older Chinese woman one day. The reasoning was that the Asian women she knew dated and married white men so that it would be easier for them to immigrate to America. It seemed plausible enough. But that didn't answer the question of dating white men exclusively. Why not Black Men? Spanish Men?

You raised the question as to whether Asian women were brought up to try to "be white" and if they are "actually trying to supress their culture". The truth is that all Asians, men and women, were ingrained with this idea.

The unspoken truth is that this very idea that white American culture is something that one should admire and emulate, has become so ingrained over successive generations, the concept itself has now become part of Asian and Asian American culture. But as you well know, it goes far beyond Asian culture.

I remember my roommate from college telling me the same problem exists in his country, Nigeria. He said that people are brought up to believe that anything white is automatically good and beyond reproach. Conversely anything Black is all right but not as good as it's white counterpart.

He also told me that the Nigerian teenage girls would try and bleach their skin with this European cream. Never mind the burning sensation and pain that was brought about with it's use. As long as they turned lighter it was worth it. In his village he said, the lighter your skin color, the more favored you were looked upon.

Interesting side note, I remember in the 70's, for a Black American to be called African was viewed as an
insult back in my neighborhood. People would fight you at the drop of a hat if you called them that. Oddly enough, my friend said that for Nigerians as well as many other Africans it's the other way around.

As you can see it affects many people from many nations. It would seem that this is a problem that exists on an international level. This self hatred has been going on longer than you and I have been alive.
