I was at a discount drug store today, and after I had paid for my purchases and was walking out the door, the alarm sounded. Now usually when this happens, I just keep walking and pretend like nothing out of the ordinary has happened, since I know damn well that I paid for everything I'm taking out of the store, I'm not a robber. But today was different, two of the cashiers called me back saying, "Ma'm, ma'm!" Sheesh, I felt like a hardened criminal, and I was irritated to say the least.

I said to the cashier, "I paid for everything in the bag, I have my receipt in my wallet to prove it." The cashier asked, "Were you rung up at the back of the store?" That was when I got really ticked off and said, "No, it was right here at the front registers". She took my bag and held it over the scanner and said, "She forgot to deactivate it", then gave the bag back to me. I felt like saying, "Duuuh, no kidding!". I said nothing, but took my bag and walked back out of the store again.

Have any of you ever experienced this before? I have several times, and I don't understand why the cashiers neglect to deactivate what they're supposed to before they put them into bags. It really gets on my nerves when I'm walking out of a store, minding my own business, and that damn buzzer goes off.

i used 2 work at a walgreens when i wuz younger, and that happened all the time. those things are annoyin, sometimes they still go off even after they're deactivated.

this has never happened to me but I used to go in the same type of stores and pretend like I was jackin items just to get them to watch me more since I already look suspicious

You should've ran out of the store, and gave them a big chase, and when they finally caught up to you made a big scene with security dragging you back in while yelling "i didn't steal nothing, i'm suing all yall"

It only ever happens to me when I try to sneak things out of the store without paying.

It's happened to me. My approach is simple. I stop at the door, look back at the cashier or security people and say, "Do you need to check these purchases again?" Almost every time, they wave me on.

The sad fact is that security systems are needed. People steal. The rest of us pay.

There is one place here in S.F. where the security tactics really don't give the customer the benefit of the doubt - it's CompUSA. In that store, you have to stop at a security desk on the way out and allow them to search your shopping bag. Other bags that you bring with you to the store are held at a separate desk. It feels intrusive and antagonistic. I'd settle for the overly sensitive alarm system over the "bag search" for everyone leaving the store.

ALL THE TIME this used to happen to me because I wear dozens of bracelets...
Had 2 cut down anyways because of my job...

On the other side of the coin,,,

there have been times when I have purchased clothes

and ya know those plastic little anti-theft tags they

generally remove as they ring you up...

well several times I have gotten home to find that those

damn tags are still on my purchases...

they are impossible to remove without that tool they use...

so back to the store for the freaking tag removal...

once the damn alarm went off as I was bringing the item

back...

would have been a whole lot easier had it gone off while I

was leaving... would have saved me a trip!!!

Once I had just ENTERED a store when all of a sudden the alarm went off...and it could only have been ME! No one else was around.

I kept walking however, as I KNEW it wasn't me 'cos I had only JUST entered the damn place - how could I have stolen anything??!!!

The lady behind the counter said, "Young man! Young man!" I was totally shocked and embarrassed, and furious...she checked my bag but found nothing. In the end it was some kind of mechanical fault with the alarm system - some metal object must have triggered it.

How bloody annoying, though!

I once arrived home with a new pair of trousers and found
they had forgotten to remove this electronic tag from them
so I had to take them back to get them to remove it.

The funny thing is when I left the store the first time,
the alarms didn't go off, but when I took the trousers
back the alarms started belting out like no tomorrow.

There were at least 25 people in the store, all staring
at me as I raised my arms and the bag above my head, and
stuttered "There's a label still on them trousers".

"Yes, I know" said their security guard who came walking
up to me, "Now if you will please come with me to our
office".



It took at least 15 minutes of complaining and waving my
receipt about before the idiots caught on and let me go.

The last time I saw something like that happen, the thing did not ring, but the security people at the door stopped this guy they abviously suspected of stealing something.
It was a young twenty something guy and he looked kinda kewl, but on the shabby side of it and he got SO pissed off at being stopped and being told to empty his pockets he dropped his pants to show 'm he wasn't hiding anything but his monkey.
Even then they hassled him, so he started to shout (in French, so dunno what the heck he was saying) and even dropped his underwear, probably shouting to them that he did not have anything hidden in there.
Even though it must have been a bummer to him, it was kinda funny to see the security guard's faces, being flashed by a suspected crook.

Just do what I do at stores with such "exit checkpoints"... inform them that they have no legal right to detain you, and keep walking. If they were to forcibly detain me, I'd press charges for criminal confinement, a class D felony in this state, and possibly file a civil lawsuit for false imprisonment.
