so...exactly what are the effects of bleaching or dying your hair? will it ruin it?

It dries it out and can really damage it.

But I have religiously dyed my hair for 2 years now and my hair is fine. It's very forgiving.

I remember back years i use to have my hair just highlighted and figured i would have it bleached.. to give it that "blondie" look... WELL.. She bleached it and then put a toner on it.. I looked like big bird.. My hair was sooo yellow it was horrible.. It took at long time for that to grow out and had to have it touched up every 3 weeks.. talk about expenseive.. 90.00 every 3 weeks.. NO thanks!!! And it was dry.. very dry.. it was dry, frizzy and yellow.. what else could be worse! Now i am heading toward the natrual look.. still blonde but highlight and lowlights.. More brown base in my hair!

bleaching is fine... i dye my hair all kinds of different colors, but because my natural color is so dark, i always have to bleach it first, in order for the color to take... and my hair has always been fine to the bleaching... occasionally though, a V-05 hot oil treatment is not a bad idea...

Once I burned my scalp with some hair dye. It hurt like fucking hell for weeks but the color was awesome. Another time the dye was so strong, it dyed my scalp and forehead. Took a week for it to come off.

I used to highlight my hair all the time... my hair was "blonde" for a long time...

It didn't damage my hair too badly... but now that I have had my natural brown colour for quite sometime, I can see a big difference, it's definitely more healthy now. Less brittle...

However, I often get that urge to highlight it again, especially in Summer, but when I remember the dreaded regrowth that came along with it... then my crave to bleach is tamed, somewhat!
