People usually fall in like with me, immediately.. heh,heh

What others think of me is irrelevent. It is what I think of myself, and how I present myself to the world that matters.

As I get older I care less and less what people think.

It's too time consuming. Having been in the closet for most of my life...living the illusion of a straight man, trying to please others (my hardcore Christian parents for example)...made me miserable. When I came out to everyone and realized that nobody gave a DAMN that I was gay, made me deal with the fact of what a waste of time it was caring what others thought...but I had build this skyscraper of illusion based on what I thought people thought/or should think of me.

duh

I wasted so many years in a lie...trying to please others...never again...

if you live in the mountains and have no interaction with the outside world, what people think is irrelevant. but if you live in a society which encompasses daily interaction and dependency upon others, what people think of you is very important. to think otherwise is naive and just plain childish.

how many of you go on job interviews and think I don't care what this guy thinks, I'm just gonna be how I wanna be and do what I wanna do and if they don't like it, that's their problem. I would say if you do, you are probably unemployed. fact is, our lives are dependent upon impressing people with a positive image of ourselves. I don't care, it's who I am is the motto of many immature people.

Right. But wouldn't you agree that peace of mind is truly reaching a happy medium, being mature enough to handle people and the "real" world?...on your terms, not other people's...so many become sheep to what other's think..A positive image comes from within, not what other's think most of the time..

that's true, but that doesn't appear to be the point of the original post, which was to "truly" live your life you shouldn't care what others think, which is a flawed way to think.

'amor de propre' is a form of self love found only in society, and it is at the center of everything that is wrong in human culture. A form of selfishness, competition, and pridefulness in which my regards for my self can only come from - I comparing myself with others- seeking to be more superior, richer, stronger, powerful, beautiful, more intelligent- than somebody else. It can not be defined in isolation, but in comparison to people. I will regard mysself as good, only as so far as I could regard others as lower than me.

It corrupts the human psyche, it leads to a dependency - because I can't define myself except in comparison of everyone else. It is a form of weakness, a form of corruption, a form of dependency, and it is the imputis of creating systems of material inequlaity. So it is at the heart of origins of inequality.

I used to worry all the time about others opinions of me...and then i was told by a wise old lady "Opinions are like assholes, everyones got one and most of them stink"...lol...i think this is wonderful adivice for everyone to live by...Lauryn Hill said something on her new album about the same thing...Something about how we measure ourselves amoungst ourselves...trying to live up to other ppl's standards, and yet we fail to realize that God, in all of his infinite wisdom...created everyone of us differently, ON PURPOSE so why worry about others opinions...go forth and live your life the way that you see fit...highfive

I think it takes real balls to be yourself even if no one likes what you do. The world is full of people who want to fit in. To all those people that do what they want and love it this brew in my hands (Red Stripe beer) is for you. Straight middle finger to all those who don't like it. Oh yeah, if you can't tell, I could give a rats ass what anybody thinks about me.

My ultimate goal in life is to have a profound impact on everyone else. Preferably something good. So in that case, I can't help but care what others think.
