So should I go for the 80 pk diesel Clio Initiale or the Mégane with the same engine, but less luxery? Go for the Mégane. The Clio is to replaced by a new model soon, the Mégane is a fresh model. That means it's up to modern standards regarding safety, luxury etc. Personally I would say, save a bit more money and buy an Alfa Romeo 147 jtd. Very nice! I've always liked Alfa (and Fiat) Spiders... in fact, my first car was a 1981 Fiat Spider. Too bad Alfa pulled out of the U.S. market about a decade ago... they're supposed to return in a few years, though. Right now we are looking at the new Nissan Maxima(2004's are out) It has taken a great leap forward! If that does not cut it, we will get another lex. MMMAXIMA! Personally, I'd pass on the Echo (my dad has one)... but hey, if you like it, go for it. As for the large car = safe theory... I tend to feel less safe driving a larger car because it doesn't handle as well, and hence, it's harder to avoid an accident. I can do accident-avoidance maneuvers in my Miata that would cause a larger car to lose control. Also, the Miata (which some folks assume is unsafe because of its size) actually tends to do well in a crash... although the car will be a mess, it's designed to sacrifice itself and absorb the impact, thereby protecting the driver.
